About the Department
SparkFun's Engineering Department is responsible for the elaboration, design and development of SparkFun’s original products. This includes microprocessor boards, sensor system breakout boards and everything in-between. In our web-store, if the PCB is red, it was produced by the SparkFun Engineering team.
The Engineering department focuses on team collaboration and success, developing user centered products in a highly cooperative, communicative and transparent manner.
Open Source and its associated community are key values for SparkFun, and a key part of all our engineering efforts. All embedded software and hardware is open source and community driven. SparkFun developed technology is given back to the community through updates or complete open source projects.

About SparkFun's Next Engineering Manager
SparkFun is looking to add a Product Engineering Manager to oversee our Engineering team in the design, creation and maintenance of SparkFun’s original products. Working as a member of a cross-functional team, the Engineering Manager coordinates and manages all product engineering activities at SparkFun.
Overseeing the team that creates our products, the Engineering Manager has a unique position within SparkFun. The right candidate not only manages the day-to-day activities of our Engineering team, they also have a unique view into our new product pipeline, gaining early access to the latest technologies on the market.
The Engineering Manager is a member of SparkFun’s Technology Group, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer.
The right candidate collaboratively works with a variety of internal stakeholders, as well as other members of the Engineering team to facilitate the development of SparkFun products. Following a user-centered design approach, the Engineering Manager ensures the design, development and delivery of SparkFun products that not only meets functional needs, but user desires and skill levels.
Essential Job Functions
Performs line-management activities - managing employees performing product engineering and related technical activities.
Serve as the Engineering focal point across all levels of the organization.
Develops and maintains relationships with leadership, peers, stakeholders, partners and direct reports.
Establish, communicate and implement Engineering specific processes and procedures.
Identifies and removes obstacles for the Engineering team.
Interface with project management, product management and product manufacturing to coordinate project execution, dependencies and final product delivery.
Facilitates the elaboration of product ideas, designs and development planning.
Develops and maintains department budget
Develops and mentors engineers and team members.
Candidate must be driven for results and action orientated
5+ years experience leading and managing technical teams.
A hardware engineering background
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Driven, outgoing and personable
Excellent time management and communication skills
Familiarity with DIY projects that involve electronics, microcontrollers and programming.
Strong problem problem-solving skills
Adaptability and open to change
Experience managing creative employees
