Earthwork Superintendent / Foreman

Veit is seeking an Earthwork Superintendent/Foreman to manage Veit earthwork projects in surrounding Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. Knowledge and proven application of all phases of commercial earthwork services is required to meet Veit’s scope of services including: mass grading and excavation, soil correction, overburden stripping, storm water retention, subgrade preparation, road and parking lot construction, landfill construction, retaining walls and site remediation. Candidate will have skills to provide overall on-site administrative and technical management through planning, coordination, and supervision of craft employees and trade contractors to ensure the project is constructed in a safe and organized manner in accordance with design, budget, schedule and quality. A minimum of three years’ experience overseeing commercial, multiphase earthwork projects is required. Construction Management education a plus but not necessary.

Summary: The Superintendent manages the daily site activities by ensuring the project is constructed in accordance with safety, design, budget and schedule. Directly manages the lead personnel and staff on each project site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Contacts General Superintendents daily regarding job specific needs including workforce and equipment requirements.

Makes daily contact with job site crews to ensure project time schedule, crew needs and communication of information is being met.

Schedules subcontractors to complete work as needed. Monitors subcontractor work to ensure proper completion to subcontractor agreement.

Maintains safe working environment by identifying safety issues or problems and taking steps to correct workplace hazards. Ensures employees have up to date information on safety procedures and policies.

Conducts daily Job Hazard Awareness meetings, daily stretching and weekly Tool Box topics.

Ability to accurately read and interpret plans and specs and able to communicate and schedule project needs appropriately.

Complete daily record keeping including: daily logs, equipment schedules, material schedules, time cards, etc.

Supports and participates in training to keep knowledge of construction methods and safety refreshed.

Manages field personnel in fair and equitable manner. Addresses performance issues as they occur.

Participates in pre-con meetings to discuss project start up and future plans. Prepares and participates in regular job site meetings throughout the project.

Provides timely and accurate documentation for reporting safety issues, equipment damage and work place injuries, according to Veit policies and procedures.

Ensures all work is in compliance with specified quality standards. Inspects field work for quality compliance, materials for quality compliance and review assembly of manufacturer’s literature and drawings before work starts.

Requirements & Qualifications:
Five or more related years of experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Good communication skills both oral and written when working with all levels of management and employees, external vendors and other business associates. Must clearly communicate directions and information. Speaks effectively before groups as well as individuals. Must have good interpersonal skills.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, reports, plan and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Must have experience with Microsoft Windows Email, Word, Excel spreadsheets, and familiar with IPad and IPhone.

Ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages ratios, and proportions to practical field quantity situations.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Required Valid Driver’s License and OSHA 10 hour, preferred but not required, OSHA 30 hour, HAZWOPER certificate, Excavating Safety Training, Blueprint Training, CPR, First Aid.

Required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Often required to sit, stand, walk, bend knees, stretch arms, talk and hear. Occasionally required to stoop, or kneel.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employees encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. Employee is exposed to environmental conditions, working near machines and loud noises associated with construction sites. Exposed to variable weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, cold and heat. Requires 8 to 10 hour work days and occasional weekends.
