The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.
This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Progress headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for the design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing) with a specific focus on Protection Settings and SCADA Settings. Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities.
The person in this position will work independently and as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying, and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to develop or possess expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.
Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required; must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies.

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Two plus years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
Electrical Engineering degree preferred - the concepts of protection schemes requires an understanding of symmetrical components and energy flow calculations.
Demonstrates good understanding of electric utility protection and control standards and the ability to produce construction documents
Demonstrates proficiency with engineering computer packages – MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD, Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical
Demonstrates ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
Demonstrates ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.
Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.
Experience and demonstrates written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.
