SCAD Savannah seeks an Associate Chair of Equestrian Studies to assess and develop curriculum and evaluate professors within the department through class observations, review of student course evaluations, review of service and professional development and review of contributions to departmental goals.

In this position, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the assigned department and work closely with the Associate Dean or School Dean to provide vision and leadership for the department, build a substantial reputation for the quality of the department and create a strong sense of collegiality within the department and of shared responsibility for the department’s goals. You will work with faculty on curriculum development, assessment activities and policy/procedure requirements and implementation, including course schedules; conduct class and annual evaluations for faculty as well as ensure mentoring and faculty development opportunities; assist in the hiring of faculty; make decisions on student academic matters; assist in the recruitment of students; assist in graduate admission and placement of students in internships and careers; and oversee the departmental budget. The associate chair teaches classes as assigned.

In consultation with the dean and department members, you’ll develop a strategic plan for the department that is consistent with the School of Liberal Arts goals and overall SCAD strategic plan. You’ll provide vision and leadership for the equestrian studies department, oversee scheduling of classes and logistics of department events. In addition, you’ll foster interdepartmental collaboration and continue to enhance the reputation of the SCAD equestrian department in academic and professional communities.

The ideal candidate has experience teaching at the university/professional level with the ability to conduct practical and theoretical courses in riding, horse care, training, course design, judging, equine business management and more. The candidate also should have documented licensing, awards and achievements. University-level administration experience is also preferred.

The Associate Chair maintains a visible onsite presence and works closely with other academic leaders, faculty and support staff at all locations. The Associate Chair ensures that all services related to the academic offerings of the department are planned and delivered at the highest quality and without any interruptions and makes sure that SCAD’s policies and procedures are administered without any exceptions.

The Associate Chair shows model leadership and makes sure that all faculty and staff of the department work toward the achievement of the university’s mission and strategic goals. Through long-term strategic decision-making and day-to-day operational actions, the associate chair ensures the department’s intentional and measurable contribution to the university’s strategic plan (SCAD2020) and the 6Rs (recruitment, retention, recognition, revenue, research and results).

SCAD equestrian students experience a dynamic undergraduate curriculum, including comprehensive study of equine care and ethics and the equestrian market and professions, that prepares them to be top-tier trainers, coaches, managers and entrepreneurs.
