Salary for this position starts at $55,000 but may be commensurate with education and job experience

STEM Assessment Specialist
The STEM Assessment Specialist reports to the Assistant Director of Assessment and works with other assessment staff, curriculum specialists, and assessment contractors. The Specialist is responsible for the development of test questions, test forms, scoring rubrics, and the review of ancillary materials, including but not limited to administration manuals and scripts related to federal and state accountability assessments. The Specialist develops guidance documents and support materials for educators and parents, and provides professional development to Indiana educators regarding assessment. The Specialist stays abreast of current policy and provides support for the implementation of Indiana’s assessment programs.

A day in the life
Reviews assessment questions for alignment to the content standards
Reviews the accuracy of assessment questions
Conducts reviews with teachers of test questions
Reviews assessment forms to ensure they match the test blueprints
Assists in setting the parameters and logic for handscored items
Assists in the production and review of all ancillary statewide assessment materials, including but not limited to testing manuals, scripts, etc.
Assists in the review of state and local summary reports for the statewide assessment program
Assists in ongoing refinement of the required statewide assessments through research, advisory committee input, and monitoring of national testing issues
Assists in the administration and implementation of the statewide assessment programs, including but not limited to ISTEP+, ILEARN, and I AM
Assists in conducing pilot and validations studies
Meets with representatives of various curricular areas and educators at all levels, including but not limited to teachers, instructional coaches, principals, and other administrators when requested by school corporations
Maintains data pertaining to the statewide assessment program
Communicates and interprets technical information regarding assessments for various audiences
Assists with training workshops for Indiana schools, ensuring timely dissemination of information regarding program guidelines, legislative changes, technical interpretations, and other key information as necessary to implement the required statewide assessments
Assists in communication information regarding the required statewide assessments to schools, legislative representatives, media and the public
Plans and delivers requested presentations to assist administrators and teachers in understanding the statewide assessment system and how to appropriately use test results to inform instructional and curricular decisions
Communicates and collaborates with assessment vendors regarding all aspects of the summative assessments
What we're looking
  • Master’s degree
  • At least three years of teaching experience
  • Expertise in Science and Computer Science
  • Experience with the administration of assessments
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of assessment policies, practices and procedures
  • Extensive expertise with Microsoft Office suite or equivalent software
  • Ability to create, enhance and edit written materials
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism when dealing with stressful and demanding situations
  • Ability to communicate with schools, legislative representatives, and the public
  • Ability to prioritize numerous work assignments and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous tasks
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work as part of a team
