The Palo Alto Veterans for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Research Assistant to support a human clinical research study investigating Machine Learning to diagnose cancer in lung scans. If this study finds that Machine Learning can effectively diagnose the type of cancer on computed tomography scans of the chest, patients may be able to begin treatment sooner than is otherwise possible.

The Research Assistant will obtain all clinical data for the patients and obtain the imaging studies. This is a key position that supports research to determine if Machine Learning can be used effectively in imaging one of the deadliest forms of cancer.

This is a regular, part time (20 - 29 hours/week), non-exempt (hourly-paid) position. Benefits:

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.

Duties:
Study Coordination:
Handle study correspondence;
Manage data transfer to Stanford co-investigators.

Enter Data in Databases:
Create an Access Database of clinical patient data;
Enter all study data into research database;
Maintain all electronic and paper files.

Download and De-identify Computed Tomography (CT) Scans:
Download CT scans from the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS);
De-identify all CT scans of Protected Health Information;
Develop a key to link back to clinical data.

Maintain Scientific and Regulatory Files:
Maintain IRB approval;
Perform online literature searches (Zotero and PDFs);
Assist in preparing research reports and articles for publication, including tables and graphs.
Perform other research related duties as needed.

Requirements:
Education: BA/BS degree (or equivalent experience) in Biology, Psychology, Health Sciences, Social Sciences or related field.

License/Certification: Valid Driver's license required.

Work Experience:
Required: At least 6 months of related experience; collecting data and/or supporting research databases.

Desired: 12 months or more of related experience; including research experience with imaging data or artificial intelligence.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the research field gained through education or experience;
Ability to understand and follow VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook;
Experience in database management, e.g. Microsoft Access; desired.
Good organizational skills and attention to detail;
Exposure to image acquisition and image processing desired;
Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing;
Good interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with study subjects;
Familiarity and/or interest in clinical research;
Ability to read and understand the study protocol;
Ability to complete directed tasks independently.
Basic math/statistical skills;
Familiarity with Endnote or Zotero desired.
Knowledge of medical terms and abbreviations relevant to obtaining and coding medical history desired;
Highly reliable with demonstrated organizational ability;
Accurate record keeping and attention to detail;

Environmental Conditions / Physical Demands:
Physical: Frequently stand, walk, and sit to perform desk-based computer tasks. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to carry items up to 30 lbs.

Environmental: Exposure to office, hospital and clinical environments. Exposure to office and imaging (i.e. CT) equipment. Occasional travel will be required to Stanford.
