K&L operates a range of internal and customer-facing software applications that are unique to multichannel retail and the specialty wine and spirits industry. The Software Product Manager helps direct the activities of our software engineers, and assists in managing the design, development and implementation process.


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 3 years experience in the Software Development process
  • Minimum 3 years within Retail, preferably multichannel (ecommerce and brick/mortal retail)
  • Proven track record in managing effective teams of software engineers
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience in an agile development environment
  • Experience in rolling out new software / scaling new lines of business
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

We’re looking for a leader in retail ecommerce who is interested in a challenging and rewarding position within a fun and engaging industry. Founded in 1976 and based in California, K&L is a leader in the specialty wine and spirits industry. We’ve been heavily engaged in custom software application development since the late 1990’s, and operate virtually all aspects of our business through a suite of tools that have been custom developed through that timeframe. We are seeking a highly talented individual to help manage new development as well as modernization of some of our older applications.

In this role, you’ll help drive new development on our core customer-facing properties (website, mobile site, and new mobile app). Additionally, you’ll be assisting in the further development of our back-of-house warehousing and operations management applications and the other custom software that our staff uses on a regular basis to transact business. The position reports directly to company ownership.

You will help lead a team of engineers to design, develop, test, and deploy innovative tools. Additionally, you’ll work with business leaders, buyers, managers and staff to shape the future of these products. Your audience spans from collectors and customers to passionate staff members, all running the applications you’re overseeing.

A successful candidate will possess a strong background in developing systems, strong technical ability, strong project management skills, clear vision of multichannel retail, excellent communication skills, and the drive to achieve results. They also have a proven track record working with engineers, helping to bring tools to production in an effective manner. We seek a problem-solver that functions effectively as a self-starter, who is motivated by a highly entrepreneurial environment.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Working with business and development teams to understand product vision and requirements
  • Define creative, high-quality roadmaps based on team strategy and vision
  • Prioritize and manage trade-offs among customer experience, performance and budget
  • Proactively identify and resolve issues to help new and existing software run effectively
  • Communicate regularly with key stakeholders in-house to ensure that internal software applications meet the real-world business use case and goals.

This position is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, with an opportunity to telecommute. Portions of the job will entail meeting with staff in SF and the peninsula, but a great deal of the role’s responsibilities can be conducted remotely.
