The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is a world-renowned art museum housing one of the largest permanent collections in the United States. An encyclopedic museum, the Art Institute collects, preserves, and interprets works in every medium from all cultures and historical periods. With a collection of approximately 300,000 art works and artifacts, the museum has particularly strong holdings in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, contemporary art, early 20th century European painting and sculpture, Japanese prints, and photography. The museum’s 2009 addition, the Modern Wing, features the latest in green museum technology and 264,000 square feet dedicated to modern and contemporary art, photography, architecture and design, and new museum education facilities. In addition to displaying its permanent collection, the Art Institute mounts more than 30 special exhibitions per year and features lectures, gallery tours, and special performances on a daily basis
REPORTS TO: Museum Shop Sales Manager
DEPARTMENT: Museum Shop
JOB SUMMARY: Serves as an ambassador of the Museum, creating a friendly, welcoming environment and consistently provides exceptional service to all guests. Greet and engage guests in conversations for purposes of sharing and selling museum store merchandise related to the Art Institute’s collections and exhibitions.
Deliver excellent customer service that helps to develop and cultivate strong buying relationships to achieve service and sales goals
Actively contributes and achieves both individual and store established sales goals
Cross-selling products to increase customer satisfaction and business revenue
Introducing promotions and opportunities to customers
Work with guests to determine their needs and be able to recommend appropriate products
Assist in ensuring that the merchandise is maintained throughout the day by keeping the display area clean, ensuring proper pricing is displayed and restocking of merchandise
Participate and use available product knowledge training to stay up to date on product features and how it relates to the collection and exhibitions of The Art Institute of Chicago.
Operates point–of-sale system with accuracy to ensure proper protocols, including correct software usage, accurate data capture, and consistent messaging in communication is made with guests
Follows inventory control procedures and guidelines with cash and merchandise handling
Effectively and accurately provides information to guests regarding museum policies, exhibits, collections, special events and programs
Provides a warm, welcoming greeting, is friendly and approachable, and resolves conflict in a professional and courteous manner
Supports the Visitor Services department by assisting in peak times
Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered)
High school diploma or GED
Minimum 1-year sales experience
Must have a basic knowledge of customer service best practices and possess good communication skills
Experience in cash handling and utilizing computerized point of sale systems with high level of accuracy
Effectively able to read, write and communicate with customers, peers and management
Proven track record in achieving sales quotas
Enjoy working with the public
Willingness to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and before or after hours as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Prior experience in a customer-service, retail, or related field requiring effective sales techniques and a positive demeanor
Ability to work in a fast paced environment and interface effectively with visitors in both conveying information and listening to questions / concerns
Ability to multi-task, while being attentive to customers and remaining flexible to the needs of the business
Possess great interpersonal skills with the ability to achieve set goals
Act as a team player who works well with others and shows courtesy and respect to guests and colleagues
Ability to communicate effectively with people and other departments
Knowledge of policy and ability to apply that to unique situations
Ability to make objective decisions using sound judgment
Able to perform basic financial calculations
General interest in the Arts
Be well organized and thorough with close attention to detail and follow-through
Be willing to assume responsibility
General mobility, including frequent movement throughout the museum, including kneeling, bending, and lifting up to thirty pounds.
Maintaining professional appearance and communications at all times.
Develop a working knowledge of the art in the permanent collection
Team-centric environment with shared sales targets and varied responsibilities throughout the day
In addition to team dynamic, works independently interacting with guests and achieving individual sales goals
Fast paced environment which is open to the public 362 days a year
EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM THE JOB:
Learn and use Chain Drive, the Museum Shop’s point of sales system
Learn and utilize Galaxy, the Museum’s ticketing point of sales system
Show proficiency using technology/computer software
Requires regular lifting of objects weighing up to 25 pounds
Requires standing up to 5 hours at a time
