The Field Services Technician is responsible for the Manufacture, install and performing repair service on all Salient Systems products as well Friction Management products. Will build and test electronics and computer based products while in a manufacturing environment for Salient. Will be responsible for providing field service support and/or any general labor that may be required for Friction Management customers. This position will be a shared position between the two departments within LB Foster Company

Essential Functions:
  • Assemble, test complex electromechanical products and/or circuit card assemblies using engineering drawings and manufacturing work instructions
  • Provide field installation, maintenance, troubleshooting/repair and on-site customer training support for all Salient Systems products
  • Liaise with external customers and internal company departments for product development and relationship-building initiatives
  • Work as a team member with peers, engineers, supply chain staff, and management to meet production and engineering design goals
  • Work outdoors on railway tracks under a variety of weather conditions
  • Travel extensively on a weekly basis throughout North America and occasionally oversees; some weekend travel required
  • Overtime hours may be necessary as workloads dictate. This may include weekdays, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Responsible for managing personal travel expense account, individual or company-supplied mechanics tools and equipment, and company-issued credit cards where applicable

  • Must be able to follow and maintain compliance to all safety, corporate and organizational requirements
  • Ability to read and understand electronic schematics, engineering drawings, and work instructions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must understand Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) principles and operate under established protocols prevent damage to components
  • Must be able to follow assembly instructions to produce complex electromechanical assemblies using tools such as hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers), torque wrenches, Digital Volt Meter (DVM), manual bench presses and assembly fixtures as required
  • Must be able to follow and complete pre-defined test instructions to verify operation and functionality of equipment using complex automated testing equipment
  • Sound technical writing skills for work report submissions
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Travel up to 65%, some internationally (must have or be able to obtain a valid passport)
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds
  • E-RailSafe and Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) certification for applicable client railways, plus other customer-based training as may be required to access work sites.
  • Ability and willingness to follow all applicable safety and operating rules for client railways in a professional and conscientious manner.
  • Must wear Personnel Protective Equipment PPE (Hard Hat, Safety glasses, Gloves and Hearing protection as required).
  • Maybe required to act as Watchman / lookout and shall devote full attention to detecting the approach of trains and communicating a warning thereof to other personnel.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, walk, use hands and finger to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, for prolonged periods of time.
  • Will be required to operate impact equipment, power tools, hand tools under heavy loads, and manual earth moving tools as required for trenching of ditches to bury hoses and electrical cables.
  • The employee may occasionally be required to lift and /or move up to 100lbs and be subjected to occasional moderate to intense physical exertion while performing required duties on uneven and rocky surfaces.
  • Work may also involve:
o Proximity to moving mechanical parts and trains / rolling rail stock
o Exposure to risk of electrical shock
o Moderate heights to access equipment for repair / inspection
o Inclement weather conditions (wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold/ heat)
o Exposure to fumes, airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals
o Moderate to high noise levels

Skills, Experience and Education:
  • High School Diploma required; trade school, journeyman or certificate preferred
  • 3-5 years prior mechanical, electrical/electronic and schematics reading experience
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and time management skills.
  • Good computer skills a must; experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) preferred
  • A high degree of reliability, professionalism and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are critical attributes for this position.
  • Sound technical writing skills for work report submissions.
