Job Summary:
The Surgical Assistant primary functions are those of a Surgical Technologist. Additionally, Surgical Assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
Three years or more as a Surgical Technologist experience is required (one year may include time spent in orientation/training).
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Successful completion of required surgical assist training.
TRAINING DESCRIPTION:
Within 1 year must complete an approved suturing course.
SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION:
Performs work independently with minimal supervision. Possess optimal time management skills and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates strong communication skills, a high level of accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Completion of an accredited (CAAHEP) Surgical Technologist program is required. Certification is required for staff moving into the role after 10/1/2023. Staff in the role as of 10/1/2023 are not required to be certified for as long as they continuously remain in the role and meet the criteria in the job description.
