ISS is seeking a Tax Accountant Associate to join our Finance Team. Based in Rockville, Maryland, this person will report directly to the Tax Manager and work as a member of the North America Accounting team. They will assist the Tax Manager with corporate tax provision work for all US and Canadian entities, and primarily, they will be responsible for all aspects of indirect tax requirements for ISS’s North America legal entities. Previous tax and accounting experience, attention to detail, strong analytical skills and solid communication skills will be critical to this individual’s success. The future and potential of the role will be based on the direction desired.
Preparation of and timely filing of monthly/quarterly/annual sales and use taxes, GST, gross receipt, business licenses, annual reports and property tax returns.
Manage sales tax audits for all state jurisdictions as they arise.
Respond to notices from tax jurisdictions and clear up issues arising from those notices.
Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to internal controls over tax.
Maintain the overall tax calendar for all fillings required.
Prepare journal entries to account for indirect taxes and corresponding tax filings.
Manage indirect tax audits, including pulling necessary documents for auditors researching various issues to ensure tax determinations are correct and working with the auditor on sampling plans.
Present, explain, and verify audit findings as well as make recommendations to reduce indirect tax liabilities and/ or increase tax refund possibilities.
Research and provide recommendations on various indirect tax matters, including due diligence support for major transactions, impact on taxability of customer and vendor transactions, and review of complex contract/purchase order language.
Monitor changes in indirect tax laws, regulations and court rulings for material jurisdictions.
Responsible for tax account reconciliations, preparing and reviewing of required tax payment funding requests and the associated journal entries.
Manage relationships with internal, external, and IT contacts for data needs and reports.
Investigate causes of issues and errors through understanding company operation and business procedures.
Ability to research indirect tax issues including taxability of products and services.
Administrate Avalara for the legal entities currently utilizing the system; set up new state and new entity in Avalara as needed, ensuring rates are properly updated when new releases are available.
Provide indirect tax expertise to assist others in understanding the tax scenarios around different types of business transactions.
1 - 3 years of experience of state and local indirect tax or VAT/GST experience.
BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field.
Strong working knowledge of ERP/Accounting Applications and Tax Software.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel skills required.
Experience with Tax Research Systems (CCH, RIA and/or BNA) preferred.
Ability to effectively manage requests with short turnaround times and consistently meet deadlines.

Highly organized, self-motivated and detail oriented.
Ability to conceptualize and manage multiple projects.
