UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service. The Project Management Office (PMO) oversees UW-IT’s project portfolio, ensuring that the overall collection of projects is aligned with the University’s mission and strategic goals. This unit also provides expert project management support for high-priority projects.
UW-IT has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Senior Project Manager.
The Senior Project Manager in the PMO is responsible for overseeing and bringing to a successful conclusion a broad range of high-profile complex technical projects at the University of Washington and its affiliated organizations. This position utilizes a broad spectrum of skills which include IT knowledge (networking, telecommunications, data center, cloud-based computing, security), problem solving, public relations, contract negotiation, cost structuring, financial management, budgeting and extensive project, and program management skills. The position assists in overseeing the deployment and project management functions of all units within UW-IT, ensuring that staff and management use the appropriate project management practices. The specific deliverables for these functions are: documents and reports from project lifecycle process—initiation, planning, execution, controlling, and closing. The position manages complex implementation projects that involve state-of-the-art technology and multiple groups and organizations throughout the University.
This work includes all phases of the project management lifecycle including initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing and continually improving the project and portfolio processes, supporting UW’s governance of information technology, providing visibility for leadership of the health of projects, and working with leadership to define success and ensure project goals and objectives align with organizational priorities.
Additionally, this role will coordinate with and mentor other project managers, and provide training to management, leadership and project managers on project processes.
Minimum of four years of experience managing progressively more complex IT projects in applications, infrastructure and networking, and comprehensive understanding of the underlying technologies.
Demonstrated advanced project management skills.
Experience with enterprise application development, SDLC processes, re-engineering and process improvement involving broad-based information systems and utilizing tools and techniques to effect business change.
Experience in deploying large, complex systems implementing business process redesign.
Experience in project and software development lifecycles and corresponding tools such as issue tracking systems, configuration management systems, requirements management systems and project management systems.
Demonstrated ability to manage large technical projects within a team environment.
Ability to manage a diverse range of activities in a very visible and pressured environment, exercising independent judgment in resolving problems.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Expertise in deploying or improving IT Service Management tools and ITIL processes.
Ability to speak and write about technical issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Expertise with web publishing, database, spreadsheet and word processing applications.
Understanding of contemporary computing, networking, cloud-based and security technologies, and distributed systems architecture.
Experience communicating with executive management during project charter development, priority setting, status and budget reporting at the Director, VP, and Executive levels.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
