New York University Press seeks a creative, organized, and dynamic Marketing Manager to plan and implement the marketing efforts for titles published in the Social Sciences, including Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Psychology, Political Studies, Law, and History. Promotional campaigns include advertising, direct mail, e-marketing, and social media outreach for trade titles, academic titles and textbooks. The successful candidate will develop and implement marketing campaigns for 60-70 new titles per year, and oversee the marketing of backlist titles in these areas. Duties include managing marketing budgets, developing and executing marketing plans and strategy, presenting at internal and external meetings, and extensive copywriting and social media marketing. This role will also oversee a direct report on the team. The role requires an incredibly detail-oriented, creative, proactive, and strategic professional able to multi-task, set priorities, and manage a multitude of complex projects within budget and on tight timelines.

The role will be office-based in New York City, but will require occasional travel to academic conferences.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm, develop, and execute marketing campaign and strategy for key titles and academic subjects.
  • Communicate plans and strategies to in-house team, including editorial.
  • Develop title positioning and messaging, utilizing digital as well as traditional media.
  • Work closely with authors on marketing initiatives.
  • Write ad copy and short- and long-form content for social media (tweets, blogs, etc.).
  • Oversee digital marketing strategies and online content.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Director and other team members to shape overall title strategy and to execute larger initiatives.
  • Oversee direct report on team, including managing daily tasks, and overall career development.
  • Occasional travel to represent NYU Press at academic conferences.
  • Coordinate marketing with third-party partnerships across disciplines as marketing point person.
  • Review and share post-mortem analysis of each measurable campaign for future opportunities.

Qualifications/Skills Required:

The successful candidate should have 3-5 years of experience, preferably in academic publishing. This role requires someone who has excellent organizational and time-management skills. Bachelor degree required. In addition, s/he should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Organizational skills/ability to multi-task;
  • Experience working on campaigns to reach an academic audience
  • Excellent project management, communication, budget management, organizational, prioritization and presentation skills a must
  • Staff management experience a plus
  • Experience working on mobile platforms a plus
  • Social media knowledge and skills
