BeAM (Be A Maker; beam.unc.edu), is a university-wide makerspace initiative that incorporates making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM celebrates the power of teams to identify problems, create solutions, and generate ideas to address the world’s greatest challenges.
The BeAM Director will be responsible for implementing the BeAM Strategic Plan and ensuring that BeAM is operating under the highest standards of quality, inclusiveness, safety, and fiscal responsibility. The Director is responsible for assessing, reporting, and communicating BeAM’s outcomes; managing a team of BeAM professional staff (three and growing; these staff manage a team of fifty-plus student employees); exercising oversight of all of BeAM’s programs; and advocating for BeAM among stakeholders both within and outside the University. BeAM’s programs include training workshops, course-integrated making instruction, outreach events, and other activities that align with the BeAM mission. The Director will report to the Associate Chair of Departmental Initiatives and will work closely with the Associate Chair to develop and implement a financial model for BeAM; this will involve the identification of multiple revenue streams and likely will include grant writing activities.
The BeAM network is composed of several spaces totaling over 5,000 square feet which serve the entire UNC community. The BeAM Director oversees the spaces in Murray Hall and the Hanes Art Center, and works closely with the managers of the makerspaces in the Kenan Science Library and the Carmichael Residence Hall. Planning is underway for a new building that will house the new Institute for Convergent Science, and this building will include a 15,000 square foot BeAM facility. The BeAM Director will collaborate with other stakeholders to develop BeAM into a program of national prominence and plan for the resources, staffing, facilities, and assessment for a BeAM network totaling over 20,000 square feet.
Responsibilities of the BeAM Director include, but are not limited to the following:
- Collaboratively project and develop annual budgets and ensure that operational costs remain within budget; develop a strategy for financial sustainability, which may include grant writing, establishing fees for courses or materials, or other approaches.
- Develop and implement assessment protocols to communicate the value of BeAM and measure outcomes that will inform decision making processes and advocacy efforts.
- Continue to develop, revise, and approve policies and procedures around tool and facility usage, safety, access, and diversity/inclusion.
- Participate in the BeAM Executive Committee as an ad hoc member.
- Develop and direct a comprehensive communications strategy to promote BeAM to new users, connect with strategic stakeholders, and increase BeAM’s prominence among university makerspaces.
BeAM is a unit with the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. APS has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Among these entities are the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in materials science.
BeAM, which is open to all UNC students, faculty, and staff, has a goal of training all UNC students to become makers. It serves the community through outreach and partnerships with community entrepreneurship groups. BeAM pursues its mission through a variety of programs, including trainings and workshops, course integrations, and support of student maker groups.

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (including but not limited to PhD, EdD, MS, MFA, ME, MBA, MEd, MPA); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 5 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues. Candidates with a background in science, engineering, or art/design are particularly encouraged to apply.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must exhibit the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of people including University officials, faculty, staff, and students; must possess superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; and must have the capacity to inspire confidence, coupled with an ability to work collaboratively in an academic setting. BeAM is a rapidly evolving enterprise, so the successful candidate will be creative, flexible, adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and self-motivated.
Making and/or research skills are strongly preferred. The strongest candidates will have experience in at least one of the following areas: digital fabrication, woodworking, electronics,
3D printing, laser cutting, metal working, or comparable/complementary skill sets. Experience conducting research and/or applying making skills to research projects is strongly preferred. Track record of successful grant proposals and grant administration is preferred.
