Miami-Dade County Animal Services (ASD) is one of the largest no kill shelters in the United States. Since 2015, ASD has saved more than 90% of the pets in its care. In addition to serving the community through adoption events, volunteer/foster programs, low-cost spay/neuter services, and pet retention, ASD also safeguards the safety and security of pets through innovative anti-cruelty programs and initiatives.

ASD is seeking a Veterinary Assistant Intern who will provide assistance to Veterinarians and Veterinarian Technicians as they perform their daily rounds.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing assistance to Veterinarians in the administration of medications and vaccinations
  • Offer support in the following procedures:
  • Venipuncture for the purpose of sample collection
  • Performing diagnostic canine heartworm and feline leukemia/immunodeficiency exams
  • Obtaining fecal samples and performing/interpreting microscopic float examinations
  • Performing skin scrapings and interpreting associated microscopic exams
  • Monitoring and providing for the health needs of shelter pets housed in off-site quarantine and in shelter
  • Recording and maintaining accurate and detailed medical records
  • Preparing USDA required health certificates in accordance with the Florida State Statute
  • Assists in the selection of transport candidates based on temperament and receiving agency needs
  • Scheduling of medical follow-up appointments

All Applicants must:

  • Submit three reference letters from professors/instructors
  • Provide a copy of college transcripts
