The ability to operate a variety of communications and telecommunications equipment while speaking with clear enunciation, multi-tasking, and typing accurately at a speed necessary for successful job performance, are essential skills required for this position. This position receives emergency call information and operates radio and telephone equipment to dispatch public safety resources such as police, fire, and ambulances; routes other emergency calls to appropriate personnel and agencies; maintains information on units' activities; accesses computer terminals to obtain, transmit, and record information such as vehicle license numbers, drivers' information, warrants, and stolen vehicle information; enters record information via computer terminal, maintains status of equipment, completes incident logs and enters data to track and record the activity of dispatched units. This position is required to work various shifts as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be career oriented with a commitment to public service. The candidate should possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, be able to understand geographic features and street locations, and be able to provide professional customer service delivery. The candidate should be able to multi-task, work effectively under pressure, make sound decisions, use good judgment, work independently as well as with a team, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, fellow employees, and other government personnel.

A High School diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license are required. No experience necessary. Some college or specialized training in communications, criminal justice, Fire/EMT, emergency management, telecommunications, transportation or public service radio dispatch; or any related experience which provides for a qualifying combination of experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, is beneficial. Full training will be provided to successful candidates. Applicants must pass required testing & extensive background investigation, and be available to work shifts, weekends & holidays. Per department policy no illegal drug use within the past twenty-four (24) months prior to application. Tattoos are not allowed on the hands, neck or face at any time. Other tattoos must be covered at all times while working with a long sleeve uniform shirt or tattoo cover sleeve. Starting entry level salary (no experience) is $31,068. Full benefits including a pension plan (L-6) through Missouri LAGERS, and with our current salary step plan, 911 dispatchers can top out after 18 years of service at $51,048/yr. Experienced dispatchers can receive credit for previous years of public safety dispatch service, with starting pay up to $34,967/yr.
