Associate Designer

Job Function

Design – Communications

Provides telecommunications design expertise and services for new customer connections and for transmission and distribution integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Design Work

Provides professional-level communication design knowledge for communication circuits, systems, subsystems and facilities that include communication rooms, racks and cable requirements; assists engineers in moderately complex engineering designs; designs and lays out simple communication/cabling systems to meet basic engineering criteria; determines circuit, equipment and material suitability for project, ensuring communication circuit types fit needs.

Design Practices and Technology

Applies sound design practices and guidelines and uses current design technology resources for moderately complex projects; provides technical circuit design and drafting service using design software; controls drawing modifications using a drawing management system and procedures.

Design Drawings

Converts moderately complex engineering designs, criteria and data into drawings and sketches; ensures design concepts and details are accurately and clearly conveyed.

As-Builts

Resolves “as-built” problems and conflicts.

Engineering Principles, Codes and Standards

Ensures that design and drafting work meet engineering principles, established guidelines, contractual requirements and specifications, industry codes and company standards; determines that configuration is consistent with codes and standards.

On-Site Field Support

Prepares field reports and develops drawings to guide construction personnel; reviews moderately complex design drawings to minimize the number of construction conflicts during installation; checks communication designs for accuracy, applying guidelines and established criteria.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience

Typically, two or more years in communications network design and troubleshooting or related field.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)

Functional Competencies

Working knowledge of industrial practices, communication design theory, communication systems and subsystems and company communication engineering standards

Working knowledge of electronic circuit elements, equipment and components

Working skills in communication equipment selection, application and procurement for communication design projects

Working drafting skills Working computer skills using drafting applications (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation)
