The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Quality Assurance Division is currently seeking a qualified civilian member of the service to fill a vacancy as a Crime Analyst.

The Data Integrity Unit’s review of all complaints and complaint revisions are guided by knowledge of FBI crime classifications, the Patrol Guide, Penal Law, the NYPD Crime Reporting System Reference Guide among other materials.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Audit Crime Complaints
  • Examination and compilation of sensitive data regarding criminal activities and investigations;
  • Create and utilize spreadsheets, databases, tables, charts, and graphics to perform analysis;
  • Create written, effective department reports and analytical products, both internal and disseminated;
  • Address questions through telephone inquiries regarding proper classification and jurisdiction of complain reports from commands.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the analysis and/or research of data related to crime, criminals, criminal intelligence, and/or other social sciences in a police, judicial, or other criminal justice setting; or
2. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and a Master’s degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field.

SPECIAL NOTE:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, three additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in (1) above; or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level I.

SPECIAL NOTE:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, five additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in (1) above, or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level II.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Positive service and sick records;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office in addition to other Department and commercial software products;
  • Knowledge of FBI crime classifications;
  • Knowledge of the Patrol Guide, penal Law and NYPD crime reporting systems reference guide;
  • Experience examining and compiling sensitive data regarding criminal activities and investigations.;
  • Experience utilizing spreadsheets and department databases.;
  • Experience creating tables, charts and graphics to perform analysis.;
  • Experience writing department reports; and
  • Experience responding to phone inquiries regarding proper classification and jurisdiction of complaint reports.
