Reporting to the Head of Archival Processing, the Archival Processing Coordinator arranges and describes archival material that is a part of the holdings of LSU Libraries Special Collections. The incumbent participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids and assists with the accession of newly acquired manuscript materials. He or she provides public services at Special Collections service points and participates in outreach efforts, digitization projects, exhibition preparation as appropriate, and other duties as assigned.
70% Performing preliminary and full processing of manuscripts collections, the incumbent must use independent judgment to interpret and apply archival principles and practices. The incumbent assesses preliminary processing needs of newly acquired collections; determines the appropriate arrangement of materials within a collection; researches historical and biographical information relevant to the collection; analyzes subject content and selects appropriate subject terms and prepares a written inventory to provide intellectual access to researchers. The incumbent also creates original MARC cataloging records (MARC-AMC). Assists in the transfer and accessioning of collections; assists processing archivists and other staff working with collections.
15% Staffing service points in the Special Collections department, the incumbent assists patrons in identifying and using materials and finding aids relevant to their research; interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections; and works with staff and student workers at the reference desk.
10% Identifying and carrying out rehousing and preservation treatments of manuscripts and archival materials in the collection.
5% Participates in in-person and digital outreach efforts; contributes to social media tools to raise public awareness of newly processed collections.
1 year relevant experience
Knowledge of archival theory, practice, standards, and best practices; awareness of information technologies appropriate to archives; commitment to technical services in support of public services.
Louisiana, southern U.S., and American history; and preservation techniques. Experience providing reference service in an archives, special collections, or academic setting; reading knowledge of French or Spanish.
Able to work in a dusty environment and to lift and move 40 pound boxes.
