Mathematica is recruiting a creative director, to be located in either our Princeton, NJ, or Washington, DC, offices. This individual is responsible for strategy, integration, and execution of design activities and is the company’s senior brand manager. As the leader of Mathematica’s internal design team, you will coordinate the function’s work and maintain design standards and brand consistency across the company. You will oversee delivery of high-quality design in project deliverables for clients, information collateral for the enterprise, as well as marketing materials for our Health, Human Services, and International business units. Your day-to-day activities will feature a range of strategic planning, management, and tactical execution of design products.

The creative director will be a collaborative leader within the Communications Department, providing creative counsel and concepts across the organization, while also delivering effective and innovative print and digital design products. You will collaborate with our research teams and business units to understand their communication and marketing goals and you will inspire the creative team to produce high quality, effective solutions that help achieve key organizational objectives.

The creative director regularly briefs the vice president of public affairs on activities that support Mathematica’s brand identity, reports to the director of communications, and works with colleagues across the department and the broader organization to carry out tasks on a daily basis. You are able to negotiate multiple interests and deliver workable solutions that support business success. You will track metrics, analyze and report results, and implement iterative changes that improve efficiency of processes and quality of products.

The primary responsibilities of the job include:
Direct and execute the Mathematica brand strategy to ensure that design activities across the enterprise are consistent with our brand values and contribute to the achievement of business targets

Provide strategic branding counsel for internal stakeholders, offering design recommendations and solutions based on brand guidelines, Mathematica priorities, and target audience needs/preferences

Manage a team of four designers and a photographer/videographer, providing art direction, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development

Lead the creative team in the development of innovative and informative print and digital products. Formats include, but are not limited to reports, briefs, fact sheets, infographics, marketing materials, signage, social media graphics, conference and event collateral, newsletters and stakeholder mailings, and presentations.

Coordinate with web services team to innovate and improve Mathematica’s digital design approach and execution

Support the development of visual information products, such as graphics, animations, and data visualizations

Supervise workflow for various design requests from across the organization, actively managing project schedules, deadlines, roles and responsibilities, accountability, and performance

Assess and improve processes and methodologies

Position Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in design or related field

15+ years of design leadership experience in a client services environment, with at least 5 years in a supervisory/management role

Experience leading the implementation of complex brand systems and working with cross-disciplinary teams

Demonstrated expertise in marketing and achieving business objectives

Documented success creating elegant, purposeful, and innovative design products while maintaining rigor, integrity, and objectivity of the foundational data/research

Strong visual, written, and oral communication skills

Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud

Expertise in digital design and web-based platforms that facilitate data-driven storytelling

Track record of turning big visions into practical solutions for clients

History of successfully recruiting, developing, and motivating high-performing design teams

Demonstrated ability to take initiative, lead by example, and achieve results
Willingness to travel as necessary
