Job Summary

Inspect, service, repair and maintain vehicles and equipment.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes malfunctions, repairs, rebuilds, maintains diesel and gas powered vehicles and equipment, and non-motorized equipment using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and various other tools of the trade.
  • May supervise employee(s) within an assigned classification of Mechanic and carries as a co-classification the same title as the workers supervised, i.e., Mechanic. May direct activities of workers engaged in similar mechanical operations. May assigns tasks to workers, review and monitor workers activities to verify satisfactory completion.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal, and departments of transportation (DOT) rules and regulations for safety and operations.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists, hand tools and power tools. Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges. Replaces defective parts and assemblies. Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • May weld, cut, or braze broken parts and structural members.
  • May perform bodywork and painting.
  • Performs and records scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Pay Rate

Competitive pay based on level of experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License (CDL license preferred)
  • Heavy mechanical repair experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diesel mechanic experience

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
  • Mechanical aptitude

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination
  • May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
  • Must pass all required assessments
  • Will require a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test

Environmental Conditions

Work inside and outside in all weather conditions, occasional confined spaces, and elevated heights.
