The position is located in the Journal Unit, Meetings Management Section (MMS), Central Planning and Coordination Division (CPCD), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. The Journal Unit is responsible for the daily preparation and publication of the UN Journal. The UN Journal is a complete picture and historical record of the life of United Nations Headquarters on any given day – what meetings are being held, when and where, what topics are being discussed and what documents are the basis of those discussions. The incumbent reports to the Supervisor of Journal Unit.

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor and the guidance of the Journal Project Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the daily preparation including proofreading and correction of the Journal of the United Nations in English and in French in PDF and digital versions. •Producing the digital journal via the Journal Content Management System (JCMS) platform. •Liaises with all stakeholders (submitters, translators, technical support staff and senior managers) to ensure a timely publication of the Journal in all six official languages of the United Nations. •Collects and screens all texts submitted for next day publication on the schedule of official meetings and their summaries, other informal meetings, events and announcements. •Verifies the accuracy of the information with a wide array of executives and managers within the Secretariat, Permanent Missions and various offices of the United Nations system. •Screens, edits, revises in English and French, the draft copy of the publication following editing rules, terminology bulletins and guidelines using eLuna, ODS, dtSearch and UNTERM. •Makes decisions in the absence of the Supervisor on the specific information to be published in any given issue. •Manages the submission of Journals through gDoc and their publishing on ODS. •Generates and formats the text of the Journal into a camera-ready copy to be sent to the print shop for reproduction. •Uploads the electronic version of the Journal (with hyperlinks in its PDF form) on the Optical Disk System for immediate availability for users of UNPRESS, ODS, Internet, gDoc and the social media. •Ensures typographical accuracy in conformity with UN editorial rules and style; performs desktop publishing functions of the digital Journal. •Independently responds to queries from submitters, translators and text-processing units, etc. concerning the Journal contents. •Ensures that all staff in the Unit receive technical support, including help with the operation of software. •Assists the Supervisor in the administrative aspects of the Unit. •Performs general office management functions for the Unit. •Trains and supervises junior staff. •Provides training to new submitters •Carries out other tasks requested by the Supervisor and the Project Manager; covers other General Service staff functions when they are absent.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in desktop publishing, copy editing or proofreading is required. Experience in online search engines for terminology and referencing is required. Experience in social media outreach is desirable. Supervisory experience is desirable. Experience in working on Websites is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in both English and French is required.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice
The Journal Unit works in two shifts. The incumbent will be required to work during the first shift (from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) or during the second shift (from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) based on staffing capacity (subject to change).

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat.
