Summary
About the Position: Fort Stewart Covers 280,000 acres including parts of Liberty, Long, Tattnall, Evans and Bryan counties in southeast Georgia. The area offers easy commuting, good schools as well as many surrounding historical sites to visit. Fort Stewart is located next to Hinesville Georgia and is about 45 miles from Beautiful Savannah Georgia. Responsibilities
Independently select and mark timber for sale in areas where there are familiar variations in species, age classes or similar silvicultural conditions.
Lead a small crew of less experienced or lower grade technicians.
Summarizes data and prepares reports and GPS maps indicating quantity of timber, condition of area, difficulties to be encountered, etc.
Determine burn location and necessary suppression action in accordance with management plans.
Review aerial photographs to determine forest conditions and need for on-site inspection.
Participate in fire management projects including prescribed burning for the management of natural resources, wildfire suppression, fire tower operations, and fire standby on high fire danger days.
Gather, check, and discuss survey data with supervisor or higher graded technician.

Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel up to 5% annually for this position.

Incumbent is required to wear a prescribed protective uniform and use personal protective equipment.
Position requires a pre-employment and annual physical.
Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver?s license.
Seasonally, depending on weather conditions, and current or projected workload requirements the position will require after hours, weekend and holiday work.
The incumbent is subject to call 24 hours a day seven days a week in case of emergency.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Forestry Technician GS-04 Minimum Qualifications:
General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with AND six months of specialized experience which includes: 1. Assisting in controlled burning processes to prevent wildfires and provide environmental regeneration. 2. Serving as an aerial burn team member to perform prescribe burning operations. AND 3. Assisting in timber cruises to provide data regarding processes such as; quantities of commercial timber stands, regeneration and timber stand improvement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level. Successfully completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.

Forestry Technician GS-05 Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Conducting timber cruises and sample surveys to estimate the quantity of timber according to species, type and quality. 2. Collect and evaluate information regarding processes such as insect control, endangered species, tree volume and growth and/or wildlife activities. AND 3. Serving as an aerial burn team member to perform prescribe burning operations.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR
Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Forestry Technician GS-06 Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Independently selecting and marking timber according to well defined marking guides and established management policies to include processes such as; thinning of dense stands, individual tree selection, retention of merchantable trees and/or harvest of over mature or damaged trees. 2. Operating a geographic positioning unit (GPS) to map harvest areas. AND 3. Participating in fire management projects such as prescribed burning, wildlife suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Master of Forestry, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Environmental Science, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Wildlife Management, or related fields.

OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Additional information
This position is a TERM position. It is a time limited position and may be extended up to a maximum of six years. This position may be converted to a permanent, career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least two years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

One year trial period may be required.
