The position is located in the Floodplain Management Section of the Engineering Programs and Services Division of the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NeDNR). Please be advised that this position is a grant funded position and is contingent upon continued funding. NeDNR has received grant funding since 1999, however this position will cease to exist if the funding is discontinued. The primary duties of this position include: hydrology and hydraulic analysis for flood risk studies, creating digital flood insurance rate maps (DFIRMs) based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) guidelines and specifications, and providing technical assistance to the general public. Since this position is a grant funded, duties may fluctuate based on the nature of grant funding received by the Engineering Programs and Services Division.
Examples of Work
Perform assignments under limited supervision as directed by his/her supervisor including: conducting hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for flood hazard identification; delineating floodplain areas based on new or existing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses; developing accurate topographic datasets using geographic information system (GIS) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) processing software; preparing technical reports in accordance with State, Federal, and grant requirements; creating DFIRMs, databases, and metadata based on FEMA's guidelines and specifications; providing floodplain information to members of the local community; providing technical assistance related to floodplain management to communities, counties and other state agencies; educating the general public about floodplain management; assisting with outreach and training efforts including demonstration of the section's 3D flood model; and participating in and conducting meetings as they relate to grant activities. May train and supervise staff if applicable to grant activities.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Engineering AND an Engineering Intern Certification OR registration as a Professional Engineer in Nebraska.
OTHER: Experience using ESRI GIS Software, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and Microsoft Office, is preferred. A Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) is preferred, but not required.
NOTE: This position may be filled at the Engineer I level which requires a Bachelor's Degree in an engineering field applicable to the employing agency. Salary for this level is $23.979/hour. Applicants will also be expected to obtain their Engineer Intern Certification at the first available opportunity that they are eligible to sit for the exam.
