The Director of Legal & Public Affairs Business Operations is responsible for all administrative affairs within the Legal & Public Affairs Department. This person works closely with department leadership to manage the financial, technological, and other administrative aspects of the group. The primary responsibilities include overseeing the financial operations of the department, including cost management, reporting and benchmarking, and processes and technology in support the department’s strategic initiatives.
Roles & Responsibilities
Responsible for the financial management of Legal & Public Affairs spending, including budgeting, forecasting, budget-to-actual variance management, third party expenditures, and the monitoring and enforcement of outside counsel, vendor compliance with the department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Billing Guidelines, and the department’s knowledge management.
Assists in strategic planning and resource allocation for the department.
Optimizes operational effectiveness through identification of productivity improvement opportunities and implementing programs, processes and tools, and technology to improve departmental workflow and processes. In particular, provides oversight throughout the department related to matter management, e-billing, document management, and training of attorneys and new hires on processes and technologies.
Develops and tracks performance metrics as a means of measuring, reporting, analyzing and communicating departmental goals and progress, including benchmarking Legal Department effectiveness against peers.
Acts as the department liaison to other corporate functions, including Finance, IT and HR, as well as to the company’s business units.
Manages the department’s information governance and records management, including the department intranet site.
Interfaces directly with outside counsel on retention agreements, fee arrangements, and matter budgets.
Supervises a financial analyst and a matter management administrator.
10+ years in the legal profession, whether a corporate legal department or law firm.
BS/BA Degree is required.
Knowledge of corporate finance and budget management.
Knowledge of legal and business processes, implementation of technology solutions, and best practices in matter management, electronic billing, and document management.
Strong leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Experience with project management techniques and methodologies.
Excellent understanding of the effective use of technology used within the department
