DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Health Department is actively searching for skilled individuals who are self-motivated and willing to provide essential services as a Public Health Nurse IV which includes the following:
Work may be related to general public health nursing or a specialized area. You may be required to work as part of the communicable disease response during outbreaks or other emergencies. Measures the physical, emotional, social, and environmental needs of women and their families as they relate to health and life course development. Develops a therapeutic relationship with women and their families that promote problem-solving and self-sufficiency. Provides counseling and instructions to assist women and their families in attaining targeted goals in areas including prenatal and postpartum care, nutrition, parenting, child health care, family planning, and special health problems. Utilizes principles and concepts of parallel process and reflective practice (modeling, therapeutic relationships, change theory, self-efficacy, client centered strength based, and solutions). Assists women and their families to establish realistic goals and measurable outcomes for promoting their health and life course development. Performs home visits in accordance with the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) model and guidelines.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of nursing practice or experience as a medical professional in a clinic or hospital setting are required.
A Master of Science degree in Nursing, a license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas, in addition to one (1) year of nursing experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas. CPR certification is required. RN License and CPR certification must be maintained and current for continued employment.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
Must be willing to work in non-traditional settings and willing and able to work non-traditional work hours.
Must be willing to use personal vehicle and get mileage reimbursement for daily travel to visit clients.
Prefer experience as a community health nurse or relevant experience in a hospital, medical clinic, public health or related service.
Bilingual; Spanish speaking preferred
Driving is an essential function of this position, as the selected candidate will travel to multiple locations as well as provide home visits to women and their families eligible for the NFP Program. A valid Driver's License and be compliant with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED

Pay Grade 22
SALARY INFORMATION SPECIAL FUNDED POSITION
Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
