DEPARTMENT: Fire Department

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Puerco Valley Fire has received a staffing grant and will be hiring several certified Firefighter EMT and or Firefighter Paramedics over the next several months. Puerco Valley Fire works a 48/96 schedule and is in good proximity to the White Mountains with plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Under general supervision, Firefighter Paramedics/EMT basic respond to emergency service calls, including fire, motor vehicle accidents, EMS calls, and/or rescue situations to protect life and property, specializing in performing responsible Advanced Life Support emergency medical care including the transport of sick and injured patients to definitive care facilities. Drives, operates and performs routine maintenance on various fire apparatus. Operates and maintains medical equipment. Performs physically hazardous and mentally stressful tasks under adverse conditions. Participates in the fire safety inspections; training, fire station and equipment maintenance, public education programs, and other public safety programs or programs or projects as may be assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions of Firefighter Paramedic may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs a full range of firefighting activities at the fire scene, including deploying and/or connecting hose, wearing of self contained breathing apparatus, directing water streams, raising/climbing ladders, and utilizing equipment, such as pike poles, smoke ejectors, and forcible entry tools; operates a variety of emergency assistance equipment.
  • Performs a variety of emergency medical pre-hospital activities at fire, accident, or other emergency scenes; administers emergency care, at the Emergency Medical Technician level.
  • Performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair tasks necessary to keep the fire station and related equipment clean, stored properly, and fully functional.
  • Performs training activities to maintain/improve fire suppression/emergency medical skills/physical conditioning.
  • Checks personal fire suppression gear, protective clothing, and related equipment to ensure that it is clean and fully functional.
  • Checks tools, equipment, supplies, and materials assigned to vehicles used to suppress fires/respond to emergency services calls to ensure that vehicles contain all required tools, equipment, supplies, and materials and that everything is clean and fully functional.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls by performing public assistance, support of community activities, snake removals, bee swarm control, smoke detector maintenance, and other types of support.
  • Subject to hazards. Working in limited visibility, proximity to electrical currents, and moving mechanical parts and equipment, exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, dusts, gases or poor ventilation. Position is subject to all environmental conditions indoors and outdoors. Position is required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus to complete portions of the job essential functions.
  • And other additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of emergency care, CPR, and other basic and advanced emergency medical assistance techniques.
  • Knowledge of regulatory, operational and administrative medical references.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, cardiology and pharmacology.
  • Knowledge of medical communication terminology.
  • Knowledge of infection control requirements and guidelines, and disease and injury profiles and presentation.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression principles, methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Knowledge of purpose/use of various tools, equipment, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical assistance activities.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with business owners/managers, other Fire Department and medical control staff, co-workers and the general public.
  • Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Skill in applying basic and advanced level emergency medical care.
  • Skill in communicating using standard telephone and two-way radio equipment.
  • Skill in safely and effectively operating a full range of fire suppression/emergency response apparatus and equipment.
  • Skill in writing clear, accurate and complete medical reports.
  • Skill in performing prolonged manual work under adverse conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) High school diploma or GED Certification;

2) Current AZ driver’s license:

3) Must pass in-depth background check which includes fingerprinting;

4) Must be willing to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, as required;

5) Possess one of the following IFSAC/ProBoard/DOD/State of Arizona Firefighter I and II Certification;

6) Possess one of the following IFSAC/ProBoard/DOD/State Hazardous Materials First Responder Certification;

7) Possess Arizona EMT or Arizona Paramedic Certification.

8) Possess or ability to obtain NWCG Wild land Firefighter Certification.
