Exciting Opportunity for a Material Scientist, Chemical Engineer or Chemist

We are seeking a versatile scientist or technician with material science, chemical engineering or chemistry background to help optimize fabrication of a new type of nanoporous encapsulation device for islet transplantation to cure diabetes. The main thrust will be to qualify a fabrication process involving a diverse set of process parameters including material science, polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, nanopatterning, PVD and photolithography. The focus of this opportunity is to suggest process changes and then take the lead to test out your ideas to optimize each step of the fabrication process. The successful candidate will enjoy working independently in a small research lab environment. NanoMotif is located one mile from the main University of Minnesota campus in the UEL research building. Two years or more of hands-on laboratory experience is required.

Hands-on experience in the following areas is preferred:

  • Wet chemistry etching and electrodeposition
  • Process development and experimental design
  • Material selection
  • SEM/EDAX analysis
  • MEMS processes
  • Surface analysis

Experience in the following areas would be helpful:

  • Vacuum deposition/sputtering
  • Photolithography
  • Light equipment maintenance
  • Metallurgical analysis
  • AFM or profilometry
  • General knowledge of material science


  • Process samples for advanced testing using wet chemistry techniques such as electrodeposition, etching and chemical cleaning, and cleanroom techniques such as sputtering and photolithography
  • Qualify results with SEM, EDAX, AFM and profilometry
  • Create new and improved chemical process procedures
  • Interpret results and solve problems
  • Create and maintain lab procedures
  • Document work accurately and concisely

General Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or related field
  • Current residence in the Twin Cities area

The successful candidate must be creative, inquisitive, flexible, detail oriented and enjoy working independently with very minimal supervision. Good record keeping is a must. This position requires an individual who is passionate about R&D and is willing to work in a wet processing environment. Good oral and written communication skills are essential. Salary expected to be $50K-$65K depending on qualifications and experience.
