Stipend: This is an AmeriCorps*VISTA position and therefore pays a stipend of $12,312 annually; medical benefits available through AmeriCorps

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC in Wichita, KS resettles approximately 300 newly-arrived refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The Kansas Refugee Economic Empowerment project aligns with the Economic Opportunity focus area of the Americorps*VISTA program.

The Volunteer Coordination Americorps*VISTA is responsible for leveraging volunteer resources to support employability and housing. IRC use’s volunteers in almost all facets of the agency’s work; where staff resources are scarce, volunteers can make the difference for a family needing extra support and guidance as they navigate new American systems and work towards self-reliance. This position provides an opportunity to develop/strengthen skills in the area of volunteer management, public speaking and community organizing. The individual will work closely with the In-Kind Donation Coordination VISTA on outreach and reporting activities, but will work independently in the area of volunteer management. This individual reports to the Volunteer Coordinator.

Present to faith-based groups, civics groups, university classes and other community groups interested in learning about and working with refugees
Meet with employers that have employee volunteer programs to determine partnership opportunities and potential.
Review and fine tune general volunteer on-boarding, especially as it relates to working with individuals with language access needs and cultural considerations.
Identify opportunities to use technology to streamline communication with volunteers.
Conduct regular general volunteer orientations at the IRC office.
Review volunteer applications, coordinate review of references for interns and conduct background checks for volunteers/interns.
Provide volunteer/intern on-boarding training about volunteer procedures, boundaries and cultural/language considerations.
Recruit volunteers to assist with IRC’s Youth Programming Needs.
Work with Special Events Coordination VISTA to secure volunteers for IRC’s special events.
Work with Immigration Coordination VISTA to secure and train volunteers for IRC’s CitizenshipWorks events.
Coordinate volunteer meetings with staff and clients.
Coordinate with volunteers to track volunteer hours and assist with drafting reports to finance.
Plan and implement volunteer recognition activities.
When necessary, complete all case notes in a timely manner.

Bachelor Degree, preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
Strong presentation skills.
Previous experience with volunteer management strongly desired.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
An interest in working learning about people and matching their skills with those most needed by economically disadvantaged refugees.
Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.
