Background

In 1915, the Paramount Theatre opened its doors on Congress Avenue. Today, the Austin Theatre Alliance includes the Paramount and State Theatres and hosts more than 250 performances with more than 200,000 audience members annually. In addition to our marquis shows, each year we provide access to the performing arts to more than 20,000 underserved youth, and we have launched Moontower Comedy Festival, which has become one of the largest comedy festivals in the country.

We are now looking for our next Director of Development to champion the theatres’ annual fundraising efforts. Through ongoing relationship cultivation and stewardship, exciting events, and our annual campaigns, the Director of Development is responsible for a budget of almost $4 million and managing a team of 8 professionals. Working in partnership with our Chief Development Officer, senior staff, and key volunteer leaders, the Director of Development provides primary leadership, strategicdirection, management and coordination for all annual fundraising efforts to increase the organization's support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources.

Responsibilities

As the leader, manager, and coordinator of our annual fundraising efforts, the Director of Development’s responsibilities include:

Donor stewardship

  • Create, maintain and foster relationships with donors within the community
  • Coordinate donor patron receptions, events, and galas in collaboration with development staff and volunteers
  • Ensure all donors are properly thanked, recognized, and connected through regular communication and other strategies for making donor relationships a priority

Event success

  • Plan, administer, and implement all fundraising activities and events
  • Analyze events’ potential and success to maintain a successful mix of fundraising activities

Team leadership

  • Lead and direct the work of development staff/contractors and activities in a fiscally sound manner by ensuring that the appropriate systems, staffing, and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals
  • Work in collaboration with the CDO and other senior staff on all aspects of a pending, multi-million-dollar capital/restoration campaign planning and execution

Operational excellence

  • Work with CDO to create and manage annual development budget and development plan
  • Work with members of the Board of Directors and facilitate Development Committee meetings to keep board members engaged with fundraising activities and initiatives
  • Oversee all direct mail letters, grants, brochures, and sponsorship proposals required to support fundraising activities
  • Provide reports about fundraising progress to the CDO, senior staff, and board of directors utilizing data analysis provided by the theatre’s Data Analytics team members

  • Able to independently lead projects from beginning to end in a hands-on environment
  • Straightforward, self-motivated, and diplomatic leader who is able to share and receive information respectfully, openly, and with kindness
  • Able to adjust to a demanding and changing environment, wearing different hats and with a sense of humor
  • Responsive and flexible, including timely responses and availability on nights and weekends
  • Effective, engaging communication style

In addition, successful candidates must meet these skills and criteria…

  • At least 5 years’ experience in nonprofit development within an organization of comparable size and budget
  • Experience managing a team of people
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of CRM administration (We use Tessitura.)
  • A Bachelor’s degree

These physical requirements are required…

  • Able to climb stairs safely
  • Able to sit at a desk, computer, etc for much of the day
  • Able to lift 10 pounds comfortably
