Job Summary

The director of student life provides direct supervision and leadership to the department of student life. The director will lead collaborative, strategic and tactical planning efforts that result in student life initiatives that support the institutional vision, mission, and strategic goals. The director will coordinate and lead the department’s emergency management and crisis response and ensure alignment with the institution to incorporate best practices to mitigate risk. Work with students, staff and facility operators to see that emergency plans are reviewed, evaluated and executed as needed. Oversee the communications and marketing efforts of the department to ensure that message is consistent with university brand. Develop and implement competency-based staff training at all levels for the department and assess effectiveness. Serve as the “chief of staff” role for the department and participate in the review of departmental policies and procedures. This position reports to the associate vice president of Student Life and is an integral part of the long-term vision and sustainability of Student Life.

Additional duties and responsibilities of the director include:

  • Develop processes and systems that create a culture of data-driven decisions and alignment to the strategic plan
  • Provide training and expertise to the department and ensure that staff members have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and roles and how their work supports the success of the broader team.
  • Oversee communications and marketing efforts for the department to ensure message alignment with the institution. Manage the communications team and establish processes for external and internal communication.
  • Oversee the online student ticketing office and the management and distribution of athletic tickets to over 29,000 students and the distribution of commencement tickets twice a year.
  • Directs and facilitates departmental initiatives based on University priorities including the interfaith initiatives for Student Life.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Services or related field and 7 years experience in student services program area.
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule, including late nights and respond to late night/on-call emergencies.
  • Experience in the supervision and development of professional staff is essential. This position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement / hazardous weather and other emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A terminal degree is preferred.
  • Proven experience in relationship building, strategic planning, and program execution are preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of the basic principles and theories of student development and leadership theory, program assessment, event planning, crisis management, risk management, property management and public relations. Ability to develop budgets and monitor expenditures. Coordinate multiple high level events simultaneously. Strong written and verbal skills are essential. Training/teaching abilities in a work setting. Exceptional skills in inter-personal relationships and a sincere concern for others. Managerial skills, including the ability to organize and supervise staff.
