The TranSystems’ Chicago, IL office seeks an entry level Civil Materials Engineer to provide materials engineering support for a Quality Assurance Program that consists of a daily material inspection placement process for HMA, PCC, and Aggregate/Soil materials, material inspection documentation and project closeout process, material inspection database, and material specification review and/or development. This candidate will be responsible for assisting the Materials Coordinating staff and Program Manager and the Local Agency QA Management Team with various tasks for HMA, PCC, Aggregate, Soil, Steel and Miscellaneous Materials in accordance with established QA program requirements. Duties may include periodic on-site field inspection, material documentation review, specification review, report writing, cost estimates and other related tasks.
The candidate must be highly motivated and is expected to have good communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as possess good organizational skills and a willingness to take on new challenges. The candidate should have the ability to apply a common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. The candidate would be expected to work occasional overtime to complete special tasks and meet program objectives.
BS in Civil Engineering from an accredited program
Ability to obtain Fundamentals of Engineering registration within 1 year
December 2020 graduate or May 2021 graduate
Previous internship experience in construction inspection with materials emphasis
Experience working within a technical office or construction environment in HMA, PCC, and aggregate material testing and inspection as related to roadway construction
Preferred experience includes work on projects for Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, and/or federally funded projects for municipalities or other local agencies
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
Self-motivated, conscientious, and detail orientated
No relocation or stipend assistance
General duties and responsibilities:
Report to Material Coordinating Staff and Program Manager and/or the Owner’s QA Management Team to assist on various tasks on a large scale QA Program.
Analysis of technical data for material investigations; and experimental or new technology trials.
Research plans, specification, material testing procedures and local agency requirements.
Periodic visits to project sites to inspect and document field work performed.
Tracking of material inspection reports and assist with QA material documentation reviews.
Preparation of technical reports.
Development and revision of technical construction or material specifications.
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
