Summary / Objective: Police Officer I enforces state and local laws and ordinances, investigates crimes, assists in the prevention of crimes, serves the community, and ensures proper equipment use, maintenance, and safety. Essential Functions / Responsibilities: Law
Enforcement

Enforces
traffic laws using radar/lidar units and visual observations.

Enforces
DUI and drug laws.

Enforces
the City Code and all related City ordinances and state statutes that fall
under his/her authority, educating the public in proper compliance as
necessary.

Responds
to crimes in progress and physically apprehends suspects. Crime
Investigation

Assists
in the investigation of crimes using established techniques, including
photographing, collecting of DNA, physical evidence, and fingerprinting crime
scenes.

Documents
investigations and activities through complete, concise, presentable, and
timely written reports as well as photographic and/or video techniques. Crime
Prevention

Protects
the lives and property of Leawood residents by participating in preventive,
aggressive patrol both by vehicle and on foot, including surveillance of high
crime/incident areas, after-hours patrol of businesses, house watches, etc. Community Service

Investigates reported vehicular accidents. Directs traffic at accidents, as well as at faulty signals and sites of disabled vehicles.

Settles civil matters as necessary to preserve the peace.

Renders aid, including performing life support if necessary.

Assists with personal crises, missing persons, etc.

Seeks out new ideas for classroom instruction and implements same effectively for various age groups. Uses suitable and creative hand-outs and visual aids.

Instructs students and/or community groups, focusing on key elements of the lesson, responding effectively to questions or concerns and maintaining adequate control of the classroom situation.

Equipment Use/Maintenance/Safety

Communicates by radio, using equipment, codes, and procedures properly to ensure clear, concise, and efficient transmissions.

Ensures all division equipment, including vehicles and weaponry is in proper operating condition prior to use. Notifies supervisor of unsafe equipment.

Adheres to equipment maintenance schedules and proper storage procedures.

Uses safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and established procedure in the use of equipment, wearing appropriate and/or required safety and personal protective gear and taking appropriate precautions to minimize risks to self, fellow department employees and citizens. Performs
other duties as necessary. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skills and Abilities - Ability to comprehend verbally, express ideas verbally, comprehend written material, express ideas in writing and comprehend arithmetically.

Ability to work independently, as part of a team and with the public.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Aptitude for operating the following equipment/tools -- firearms, less lethal weapon systems, Intoxilyzer, radios, vehicles, cameras, fingerprinting/DNA collection equipment and computer.

Ability to protect confidential information. Education and Experience -
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Must successfully complete a certified Police Academy.

Must successfully complete a Department Police Training Officer Program. General Aptitudes and Physical Requirements: Must be
able to successfully complete department physical.

Must be
able to speak and write adequately to perform the essential functions of the
position.

Must be
able to be present at various work sites.

Must
have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in
variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms,
heat, cold, and any other weather indigenous to the area.

Must be
able to walk or run over uneven surfaces and to engage in occasional climbing. Additional Information:

Must
have a valid driver's license, must have an acceptable driving record in the
City"s discretion, and must be proficient in safe vehicular operation.

Must
maintain an acceptable discipline, accident, and safety record.

Must
maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in
the City"s sole discretion.

Must be
available and willing to work such hours as the City determines is necessary or
desirable to meet its business needs.
