The overall responsibility of this position is to plan and develop with Corporate Engineering Resources, using sound engineering principles: equipment design/redesign, equipment/machine layouts, work-flow, and safety precautions to maximize utilization of plant and manufacturing facilities, improve uptime/throughput, and provide engineering solutions to business strategies. The Engineering & Maintenance Manager will manage lean, safety programs, grounds, building and facilities.
The Engineering & Maintenance Manager manages the evaluation, development, and implementation of complex designs and projects. The Engineering & Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the equipment and facility maintenance team, including adherence to standard MMS system.
The Engineering & Maintenance Manager reviews design and documentation to ensure compliance with design criteria and standards. He/She also conducts feasibility studies, determines manpower and cost estimates, and develops engineering criteria.
The position functions include investigating and analyzing performance trends, working with internal and external resources with reference to designing/testing solutions, and improving overall operational effectiveness of branch resources. The individual will lead the Maintenance Department through managing, coaching, and mentoring a team of maintenance experts in electrical, mechanical and PLC utilization. Ensuring development, welfare, behaviors and performance are measured and responded to proactively, professionally and accordingly. Responsible for the monitoring, scheduling and providing status on all Engineering and Project related activities to meet project deadlines. To undertake project management duties (estimating, proposal preparation, planning, management, cost control, supervision etc.) as required to meet project time scales and cost budgets. Managing high-impact, long duration engineering initiatives and projects; ensuring achievement of engineering plan and works with Corporate Engineering/Process on Strategic Engineering initiatives.
Key Duties / Responsibilities:
Uses advanced engineering principles for design, management and execution of local and corporate initiatives/projects to improve overall effectiveness of branch resources as measured by improvements in productivity, quality, safety and cost metrics.
Manages the RFQ process required to support the development of business cases for capital investment projects.
Facilitates the trainer the trainer focus on continuous improvement with a focus on 5S, Best Practices (technology, training, performance execution and process management), Lean Practitioner and training programs at both the plant and MFG network levels.
Leads the deployment and sustainment of process improvement tools and techniques which impact new product installation and GO LIVE, equipment preventative maintenance and rebuild, work process improvements, training and organizational design.
Prepares technical reports for use by field engineering or management personnel for long and short range planning. Administers and maintains INFOR MMS for preventive maintenance, parts usage and repair activity.
Plans, Participates and evaluates field installations, recommends and implements design modifications to eliminate machine or system downtime, thereby increasing productivity while lowering operating costs and sustaining operations in a safe working environment.
Evaluate new equipment, using a value-added process, and products while always considering cost, available space, time limitations, company strategic direction, and other technical and economic factors
Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
Provides leadership and technical support to assigned Engineering and Maintenance leaders within the Valassis Shared Mail MFG network.
Leads and/or supports MFG focused safety initiatives at both the plant and Shared Mail MFG levels with a specific focus on safety training, OSHA compliance, injury/illness prevention, Hazcom and Machine Guarding.
Leads the Shared Mail MFG Maintenance Collaboration team to sustain the focus on maintenance management which includes information/best practice sharing, parts utilization, preventative maintenance and work order management.
Education & Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Equivalent Engineering Field Experience. MBA in Business Administration or equivalent field is preferred but not required.
Lean Six Sigma certification; Green Belt is required, Black Belt is preferred
Specific qualification include: Knowledge in AC and DC controls, industrial motion control, PLCs, and Motion Control Systems. Beckhoff and Ethercat a plus
Training in Project Management and/or Manufacturing Engineering
AutoCAD and INFOR-EAM experience is preferred
Proven track record of process control management and continuous improvement
Ability to think strategically while managing timely and consistent execution at a tactical level
High level of organizational and interpersonal skills
Familiar with industrial power transmission including: reduction gear-boxes, chain drives, timing-belts, conveyor transport belts, and pneumatics
Knowledgeable with Digital Test equipment (Oscilloscopes function generators etc).
Experienced with moving/relocating machinery
Knowledgeable in Network topologies, server based architectures, wireless technologies and Human – Machine Interface controls (HMI)
Experience / Skills / Abilities:
10 + years of progressive experience in Engineering Management and /or Leadership roles, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Communicates job performance standards to associates.
Provide timely and consistent feedback, coach and motivate associates to exceed expectations.
Develop performance improvement plans as appropriate and administer corrective action as needed.
Responsible for reconciliation of hours for payroll and tracking of attendance.
Provides fair and consistent administration of company policies and procedures regarding attendance, safety policies, job performance, etc. to ensure positive associate relations.
Communication & Contacts (Internal/External):
Informs leaders and other internal clients (Manufacturing, Engineering, etc.) of pertinent information and communicates to other departments as necessary.
Communicates with external vendors as needed.

Establishing weekly schedules and authorizing overtime on a daily/weekly basis within established guidelines, to ensure delivery within the desired IHD.
Plan and execute business improvement strategies such as procedural flow or equipment purchase.
Look for creative ways to help reduce CPM at the branch.
Determine the best alternative of two or more tested approaches to an operational problem.
Evaluate and make purchasing decisions relative to needs, availability, and cost.
Determine best possible scenarios for scheduling conflicts when it comes to training.
Decide the best method to roll out a given solution to a particular problem.
