Responsible for providing engineering leadership, direction and support to maintain and improve coating process for current products and new product introductions, through the proper selection and qualification of coating process. This will involve working with various coating suppliers and internal Mercury coating lines. This position requires a solid understanding of paint/coating systems from both a chemistry and an applications standpoint.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Establishment, refinement and execution of the paint and coatings engineering strategy.
Ownership in the development of manufacturing coating processes within Mercury Marine.
Develops and updates process documentation/ work instructions
Work cross-functionally with PD&E to develop and comply/sustain PD&E Coating performance requirements.
As the Mercury engineering expert on coating processes the responsibilities will include:
Coordinate/conduct all tests required for validating coating and their performance and provide clear, concise documentation and direction on corrective actions.
Able to interpret and implement PD&E coating performance requirements for all Mercury products via manufacturing process
Perform failure analyses on internal coating related product failures
Functional knowledge of Chrome Conversion, EDP, Liquid, Powder Paint Materials applied to aluminum castings.
Develop work instructions related to coating process.
Working with outside contract laboratories for coating evaluation and testing as required.
Understanding of various Governmental Compliance Regulations that govern manufacturing facilities that use hazardous paint processes.
Anticipates cost avoidance opportunities and the achievement of cost reduction opportunities.
Capable of designing part fixtures that maximize density
Recommend and justify capital equipment
Support coating engineering projects at other Brunswick divisions when requested.
Support safety through proper work environment process.
Support ISO and other initiatives within the operations.
Provide coaching and mentoring for peers.
Remain cognizant of emerging environmental and regulatory trends and how they may have an impact on current and future coatings strategy.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements:
Education: Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Engineering from an accredited university. Master’s degree is a plus.
Experience: 5+ years of related Paint Engineering experience in a paint application or manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of appropriate coating systems for metallic components.
Knowledge of appropriate coating systems for polymer / composite components.
Working knowledge of corrosion and a coatings capability to mitigate those environmental effects.
Have general knowledge of tooling, machining, fixtures, assembly, as well as other equipment associated with a manufacturing environment to accomplish successful coating performance.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings as well as other associated Mercury and industry standards.
Good communication skills and can lead a cross-functional project team.
Ability to present the results of your work to cross-functional internal stake-holders
Ability to prioritize conflicting project needs and deadlines.
Has a good working knowledge of quality systems, SPC and analysis tools (Lean 6 Sigma, DFSS) as related to continuous improvement
Limited travel to Brunswick facilities is required.
