Department of Public Transportation. Full-time position with benefits. Preferred hiring range: $35,297 - $40,601. Position serves as a working supervisor by logging transportation service requests; prepares and maintains appropriate records and files; receives incoming telephone calls and dispatching transportation vehicles; receives, counts and receipts money received by drivers, preparing tally sheets and reconciling receipts, daily. Position serves as the lead, central control for day-to-day scheduling and mechanical problems; serves as the primary point of contact in working with supervisory staff and customers in resolving customer issues and concerns related to dispatching services. Position hires, trains, supervises and evaluates Public Transportation Dispatchers; trains or assists in the training of Dispatchers; prepares schedules and calls replacement and substitute drivers, as needed; approves work time by recording in-and-out times, mileage and passenger data. Position coordinates services with other managers and supervisors regarding incidents, accidents, policies and procedures; coordinates services with local and regional agencies, such as the Emergency Operations Center, Police Department and Fire Department, to provide a quick response for potential emergency situations.

Position requires:
General knowledge of street system and location of major buildings and facilities; transportation policies and procedures; personnel practices and supervisory practices.
Thorough knowledge of software used for scheduling, time management, payroll, trip scheduling (field trips, transit buses and school buses) and GIS.
Ability to record information accurately and quickly; speak distinctly; solve problems within scope of responsibility; deal with the public and drivers in a courteous manner; conduct self in an appropriate manner as a representative of the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT); maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; plan, schedule and supervise the work of others; formulate safe operational policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements: This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions. Work is performed in a communications center and office environment. The employee is exposed to computer screens and is required to work in a confined space.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver's license required or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire date. Experience with prioritizing work duties and multi-tasking required. Some supervisory experience and some post high school education preferred.

Incumbent subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), a DMV driving record review, criminal background check and credit history review.
