Duties of Student Clinical Laboratory Assistant

1. Responsible for intra-lab transport of specimens:
a. Picks up specimens processed by Lab Control.
b. Identifies specimen routing from tube routing codes.
c. Delivers specimens to workstations.

2. Responsible for secondary transport and archiving of specimens:
a. Collects tubes from workstations after analysis.
b. Determines whether tubes require further routing.
c. Delivers tubes requiring further routing to next routing destination.
d. Returns tubes not requiring further routing to Lab Control archive system.
e. Physically enters specimens into archive system.

3. Responsible for finding missing specimens:
a. Performs computer look-up on missing specimens.
b. Determines last location of specimen.
c. Finds specimen and delivers to appropriate workstation.

4. Responsible for locating specimens for add-ons:
a. Performs computer look-up of add-on specimen
b. Determine location of specimen.
c. Finds specimen and delivers to appropriate workstation.

5. Responsible for daily refrigerator and freezer temperature checks:
a. Checks refrigerator and freezers daily and records temperatures.
b. Maintains weekly recording charts on refrigerators and freezers so equipped.
c. Notifies supervisors of out of range temperatures.

6. Helps with supply deliveries:
a. Opens boxes of supplies as delivered.
b. Notifies appropriate individual of their arrival.
c. Helps unpack and store supplies, fill dispensers, etc.

7. Helps with supply inventories:
a. Counts supply inventories for supervisors when needed.
b. Directly responsible for inventories of some non-technical supplies such as pipette tips, applicator sticks, gauze, paper towels, alcohol wipes, bleach etc.

8. Responsible for operation of Glassware washing machine and collection and distribution of glassware.

9. Makes up biohazard boxes, seals filled biohazard boxes, and prepares them for disposal.

10. Performs other duties as required that may include roles and responsibilities of testing personnel.


High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous laboratory experience preferred.

Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and clinical personnel.

2. Must be able to successfully complete annual competency testing at required workstations.

3. Must be extremely organized and capable of working under pressure and be flexible to adjust schedule in
accordance with the needs of the department.

4. Must have excellent interpersonal skills.

5. Must have ability to handle questions and give pertinent information on the telephone.

6. Must have the ability to interpret laboratory requisitions.

7. Knowledge of computers helpful.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

1. Stressful, noisy environment. Extremely busy department.

2. Hazardous exposure to infectious blood and body fluids.
