Title : IT Manager
Reports To: Founders
Location : 3901B Main Street, Suite 106, Floor 1, Philadelphia, PA 19127
Job Type : Full-Time
What does an IT Manager do, anyway?
Our fast-growing company utilizes a wide range of technology to drive our products, help our employees, run our office, and support our customers. This leadership-level hire will own all technology within our organization and keep it in line with best practices. In plain english, this means managing our developers (web, application, and other), supporting our employees and customers with tech-related issues, maintaining our server infrastructure across Google, AWS, Rackspace, and other vendors, maintain our code repositories, and hire and manage the contractors, vendors, and companies that carry out much of this work for us.
About 30% of this will be roll-up-your-sleeves, hands-on work - we will rely on you to plan and execute. The remaining 70% is strategic leadership and management - it will be your vision for our technology, carried out by key vendors, that keeps our tech safe, secure, reliable, and in line with current best practices.
Do you love the challenge of thinking through the best ways to simplify a complex problem? Do you enjoy helping people who need your help with their tech, because they don’t have the same skill set as you? Would you find fulfillment in closely managing a team, AND diving into tactical, hands-on tasks? Do you like reading about the latest in these underlying technologies? If so, this is the job for you. If you prefer to work in a vacuum or silo, don’t have the knack for helping non-technical staff, or prefer to “do everything yourself”, this might not be a fit.
This is the one and only technical position at our company - if you’re looking for the opportunity to truly run a company’s technology roadmap, this is your chance!
In plain terms, here’s what this usually means:
Manage the development, security, maintenance, and system architecture for our flagship RapidCut™ product
Provide high-level internal support of our RapidCut™ software
Manage company-wide IT infrastructure, including Amazon AWS, data backups, and security, as well as in-office IT such as new computer setup, VOIP, WiFi, Google Apps, password management, and end user support.
Organize and maintain code repositories in a central location for all software and websites
Lead development and maintenance, utilizing outside resources, of websites (Magento and WordPress), reporting tools, and other custom web apps
Hire and manage outside tech vendors (developers, support, etc)
In addition, you'll be responsible for company-wide processes such as:
Ensuring smooth operations for all IT systems, by identifying and creating company processes to get ahead of potential risks or failures
Understand other parts of the company, by seeing things from another department’s perspective, and having the ability to connect the dots, is critical
Work closely with members of the Curio leadership team, including the founders, Controller, VP of Marketing, and General Manager
If this sounds like you, your previous education, work experience and passions probably sound like this:
5+ years of hands-on experience with these technologies is critical: Dropbox, Google Apps, Amazon AWS, MS SQL, HTML, Windows Server, Git, Mac, and Windows
3+ years managing a technical team
Proven work experience as a Project Manager
Keen ability to look to the future and build processes to prevent avoidable mistakes
Fantastic communicator, which means you’re a great listener
Consummate learner and committed to personal growth
Knack for problem solving, organization, and ability to spot future problems before they become an issue
Ability to be strategic to develop the long-term vision for our technology and tactical to get the job done. If you like rolling up your sleeves and doing some things yourself, you’ll love it here. If you also like delegating some tasks and empowering your teammates to own certain tasks, you’re a good fit. If you can only delegate, or only do-it-yourself, we’re probably not the right workplace for you – the most successful people in our company regularly do both very well.
Lastly, here’s what success looks like in this position:
The founders of the company are out of all IT and tech related matters
No security breaches in any of our systems
99.95% uptime goal across all systems
All downtime is resolved within 2 hours
All code is stored in Git with proper version documentation
Roadmaps for scale are built, accounting for 10x, 100x, and 1000x current volume according to independently determined best practices
In-house IT issues (supporting our employees) are resolved within 1 business day
Developers and other technology vendors are evaluated on an annual basis for performance and cost
