Summer Camp Staff Needed – Summer 2019

Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson is seeking unit leaders and camp counselors for our sleep away camp, Rock Hill Camp in Putnam County. Previous summer camp work experience and/or experience working with children helpful. Positions pay a seasonal salary according to previous camp experience. Camps run mid-June to mid-August 2019. You must be available for the entire season. Must be at least 17 years old to work at sleep away camp.


To live with and guide campers throughout their camp experience in accordance with standards set by Girl Scouts of the USA, the American Camp Association and the New York State Health Department. and to direct and supervise the work of the unit staff.


  • Knows the girls in the unit and helps them learn to respect the rights of others and to understand differences and similarities of other campers.
  • Teaches camping skills and appreciation of the out-of-doors.
  • Guides activities and experiences in the unit through use of troop government, girl-leader planning, and the Girl Scout program.
  • Coordinates unit activities with those of the entire camp.
  • Supervises the unit staff - delegates jobs, guides them in the work, arranges schedules for time off.
  • Supervises unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment.
  • Assumes responsibility for health and safety of the campers:
  • a) maintains a well-equipped first aid kit;
  • b) checks with the nurse on supplies needed for a trip out of c&
  • c) reports accidents promptly;
  • d) keeps nurse informed of health status of campers and unit staff.
  • Serves as waterfront guard or watcher if needed, for her unit.
  • Acts as part of a team to plan, execute all camp programming with camper, council, other unit leaders and director.
