Deputy Director Bacteriology

A Molecular Biologist/Bacteriologist position is available in the Bacteriology platform within the Research function of sanofi pasteur’s R&D organization. Current projects target a number of bacterial pathogens causing important human diseases. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team whose responsibilities include identifying, producing & evaluating key vaccine candidates against human pathogens. Experience in microbial pathogenesis, bacterial genetics, bacterial-host interactions, state-of-the-art molecular methodologies and animal models will be required.

The candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to work effectively within a team, have strong communication skills supporting cross-functional teamwork, be able to plan their workload to ensure execution and delivery of departmental objectives, as well as present findings at project team meetings.

Job Responsibilities:
Demonstrate technical excellence in a variety of microbiological and molecular biology techniques for investigating bacterial pathogens with the goal of identifying target antigens for inclusion in novel vaccines
Experienced in recombinant DNA techniques and expression of recombinant proteins in various systems (virus, yeast, bacterial, mammalian).
Experienced in culturing, manipulation and characterization of a range of BSL2 bacteria
Experience with pre-clinical animal models for evaluating protective efficacy and immune responses to vaccine candidates
Developing and implementing in vitro assays for testing and characterizing vaccine candidates (ELISA & cell-based assays)
Keep up to date records and document all research findings
Keep up to date on relevant scientific literature relating to his/her work and present their work at project team meetings where appropriate
Understand the overall project goals and ensure completion of their own activities within the overall project goal timelines
Provide guidance and supervision to others within the laboratory when necessary
Willingness to share information and expertise to enhance overall performance of the team
Ensuring safe lab practices and BSL requirements while working with live microbes and microbial products.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD with approximately 3-5 years of postdoctoral experience gained in academia or industry.
This position will require the candidate to spend a majority of their time pursuing lab-based activities
Demonstrate a broad expert knowledge of scientific concepts and practices in the areas of bacteriology and vaccine design against bacterial pathogens
Work independently, displaying innovative thinking and work in a productive team environment generating high quality research and on time delivery of project goals
Be able to seek opportunities to work with scientists from different functions and geographical locations
Supervisory experience of junior level scientists a plus
Excellent skills in written and oral communication
Computer literate
Good knowledge of appropriate bio-safety practices (BSL2)
