Job Summary and Scope of Responsibility:

Bernard Zell seeks an innovative and enthusiastic Physical Education instructor to cover a maternity leave beginning on or around January 27th, 2020 and lasting through May 20th, 2020. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching a student-oriented curriculum while being comfortable with or willing to learn the latest in technology, fitness, and wellness. This position will include teaching 20 Physical Education classes per week within Early Childhood (SK), Lower School (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th), and Middle School (5th, 6th, 7th). This position will include teaching a roller skating/rollerblading unit for three weeks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create daily lesson plans in line with the department’s curriculum and vision
  • Using the latest in technology, prepare and execute thoughtful units of study designed to reach the different learning styles of the students in the classroom, with a focus on integrating fitness concepts
  • Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment
  • Organize and manage a positive classroom grounded in the belief that all learning begins with attending to children’s developmental, social, and emotional needs
  • Consistently and clearly communicate with colleagues, administrators, and parents
  • Take on a minimal amount of non-teaching responsibilities, including recess/lunch duty



  • Bachelor Degree in Physical Education or related field required
  • Masters Degree in related field preferred


  • Minimum of three years teaching Physical Education as a lead teacher
  • Experience teaching in K-8 or K-12 school preferred
  • Experience coaching at the Middle School level preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Collaborative, flexible teacher; able to work within the PE department and across different divisions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a child’s physical, social and emotional development
  • Clear communicator with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching Physical Education
  • Strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills
  • Ability and willingness to coach multiple sports, including volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, or track and field
  • Genuine love of learning and desire to work with children as a facilitator of learning
  • Commitment to teaching to diverse learning styles and differentiated instruction
  • Flexibility in teaching in different locations, including gym, field, fitness center, and classroom
