Design Mechanical Nuclear Engineer I/II
Summary
The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.
The McGuire (MNS) and Catawba (CNS) Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Mechanical Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the MNS and CNS nuclear sites. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestone requirements.
Responsibilities

Develop scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes including, but not limited to, flow calculations, mechanical equipment sizing/selection, piping sizing/selection, and independent reviews of peer prepared engineering products.

Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.

Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.

Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.

Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.

Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.

Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer I
-
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

0-2 years of engineering experience.

Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.
Nuclear Engineer II
-
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

2-4 years of engineering experience.
-
Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Background in Power Plant Design/Operation or Power Plant Component Sizing and Selection

Knowledge of ASME Codes (B31.1, BPVC Sections III or VIII)

Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to complete PE license.

Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Specific Requirements:
-
In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.

Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
-
This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed

Office and plant environments.

Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.

Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
-
Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

The work week is Monday – Thursday (Fridays/weekends as needed), 10-hour days. After completion of initial training and/or obtaining applicable qualifications, the candidate will work a hybrid schedule – two days onsite, two days remote.
