We are seeking a senior autonomous and robotic systems engineer to help us develop technologies that facilitate enhanced situational awareness for civilian and military users in dangerous and cluttered environments. As a member of our team you will design, analyze, evaluate and improve systems for DHS, DOD and other government sponsors. We are looking for a highly motivated individual, experienced in ground and aerial unmanned / autonomous platforms, to play a leading role in this area of critical needs for our sponsors.
As a Senior Autonomous and Robotic Systems Engineer…
You will lead and contribute to projects that encompass concept development, hardware design, software design, simulation, integration, and lab/field testing.
You will develop and propose new research direction in robotics and autonomous systems in support of APL’s internal research efforts and sponsor programs.
You will mentor new staff to make leaders in this area and build and develop our group’s competency level in robotics and autonomous systems.
You will write research papers, participate in technical conferences, and engage with professional societies.
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…
Possess a Master’s Degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on robotics and/or autonomy.
Have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in autonomous systems, robotic systems, and/or unmanned vehicles including all aspects of the system development cycle (design and trade space analysis, autonomy, simulation, field test and troubleshooting).
Possess deep knowledge of robotics and autonomous systems technologies, techniques, architectures (e.g. ROS), and algorithms.
Are proficient in filtering, state estimation, and tracking using a variety of sensor data, especially 2D/3D camera (computer vision) and LIDAR.
Are proficient developing and troubleshooting software capable of effective localization, planning, navigation, and vehicle control.
Are a successful technical thought leader with strong technical writing and presentation skills as evidenced in proposals, publications and/or presentations.
Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Possess a PhD in a relevant field.
Have domain experience in developing systems for DHS and DOD operational environments.
Have strong, demonstrated project management and leadership skills.
Have experience with integrating low-SWaP computational platforms with robotic/autonomous systems
Have experience with multi-robot systems and robotic swarms.
Are proficient with fusing a variety of data modalities for perception and inferencing.
Have experience with localization/navigation in GPS-denied environments.
Possess experience developing deep learning/machine learning solutions with modern toolchains (e.g. TensorFlow, MXNet, PyTorch).
