General Summary:
A Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the practice of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioners' specialty.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides administrative support including, but not limited to, the following:

o Takes patients' medical history, information pertaining to the patients' visit to the doctor , and record vital signs of patients to help the doctor with diagnosis

o Handles pre-authorizations/certifications as necessary

o Relays information to patients regarding preparation of laboratory tests and examinations

o Arranges examining room instruments and equipment and keeps the examining rooms neat and clean

Registration, filing and maintenance of medical records and documents
Initiating and maintaining correspondence with patients and insurance companies
Processing medical insurance claims, medical billing and electronic claims, and incorporating correct coding procedures
o Respects and maintains privacy and dignity of patients and assures patient confidentiality at all times

2. Other related responsibilities:
o Represents the clinic in a professional manner in person, in telephone conversations, and in written correspondence

o Performs basic functions such as photocopying, scanning and faxing

o Performs as Patient Services Representative, as needed

o Any other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
1. High School Diploma or GED required

2. Medical Assistant Certification from AAMA, AMT, NHA or NCCT required

3. CPR Certification approved by AHA

4. Minimum two years of experience in a medical office setting required

5. Knowledge of medical terminology, preferred

6. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook is required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ø Phlebotomy, EKG

Ø Vital signs, patient assessment

Ø Administration of medications (Oral, IM, Sub-q, Intradermal, IV

Ø Ability to work independently

Ø Strong oral and written communication skills are essential

Ø Attention to accuracy and detail

Ø Demonstrates a clear understanding of the importance of staff satisfaction

Physical Demands:
Ø Individuals must be able to meet established specific physical requirements of the job including sitting at a desk or meeting table, reaching, lifting, pulling, bending, stooping, twisting, standing and walking

Working Conditions:
Ø Exposure to blood borne pathogens

Ø Normal medical office environment
