About the Role
This role is for a Sr. Acoustic Research Scientist/Engineer within the HARMAN X. HARMAN X is the corporate research division that focuses on advanced technology development for applications across all Harman product lines including Automotive, Lifestyle (consumer), and Professional. This position is located in Northridge, California where the successful candidate will have access to world class tools and facilities.
The Sr. Acoustic Research Scientist/Engineer is expected to be innovative and results driven. They must have strong analytic skills with the technical depth to understand underlying acoustic principles; sufficient exposure to the audio industry and psychoacoustics to understand what matters to the consumer; and the imagination and vision to see what hasn’t been done before, to create something better and new. The successful candidate will work within a broader team of experienced researchers but should have knowledge and confidence to independently tackle projects related to physical acoustics, audio systems design, audio algorithms, novel testing methods, and psychoacoustics.
What You Will Do
Invent and mature new acoustic technologies (HW/SW) related to headphones, speakers, microphones and beyond
Evaluate existing technologies for market readiness through benchmarking
Advance the science of sound by creating methods to study acoustic/audio phenomena, define key performance metrics, and research what ultimately matters to the consumer
Design audio systems and/or audio algorithms that measurably deliver breakthrough experiences and work with the broader team to build proof-of-concept/ demonstration systems
Write reports, white papers, and patents
Transfer new technologies to commercialization teams
What You Need
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in audio related discipline: physics, acoustics, music technology, computer science, electrical engineering etc. plus five years of relevant acoustic science/engineering industry experience, or Master’s degree plus one year of experience, or PhD new hire with related research experience.
Theoretical understanding of acoustic systems and signal processing algorithms (microphones, headphones, earphones, or loudspeakers, etc.), acoustical environments (room acoustics), and listener perception (psychoacoustics)
Practical experience with acoustic systems and signal processing algorithms (microphones, headphones, earphones, or loudspeakers, etc.), acoustical environments (room acoustics), or listener perception (psychoacoustics)
Experience with acoustical test and measurement methods
Experience with acoustical data analysis using MATLAB, Python, or equivalent
Experience with audio signal processing algorithm design and tuning
Extreme curiosity and intellectual honesty
Excellent written and verbal communication
What is Nice to Have
Advanced algorithm experience such as beamforming arrays, immersive audio, HRTF processing, ANC, adaptive/dynamic signal processing, machine learning methods, etc.
Audio prototyping and demo experience for consumer, professional or automotive applications
Experience with transducers and sensors
Experience with data science and machine learning
Experience creating VSTs or other real-time audio processing prototyping
Acoustic modelling for products and environments including lumped parameter, ray-tracing, or package solvers such as ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.
