The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 200 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is looking for a Temporary/Fixed Duration Research Study Assistant for the Harborview-based Trauma Survivors Outcomes and Support (TSOS) research program. TSOS currently supports two trauma center studies: one multi-site investigation funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and one single-site study funded through the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute (PCORI). The RSA will assist with the day-to-day administration of both studies, which aim to develop new interventions for injured trauma survivors.
- Track progress of patients enrolled in the PCORI study; complete follow-up interviews, which may be completed over the telephone or in-person
- Enter data, and ensure data quality using SPSS, Excel, and web-based platforms such as REDCap. May prepare summary narrative reports, graphs, tables, charts and illustrations.
- Contact trauma center staff and administer surveys to trauma center staff at trauma centers nationwide.
- Recruit injured patients from inpatient trauma center and emergency department settings. Perform follow-up interviews with patients in inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
- Maintain confidentiality of research data and participant records.
- Copy-edit and assist in the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, reports and grants submissions, including text and tables/figures.
- Conduct literature reviews.
- Draft and copy edit various professional correspondences.
- Assist in drafting/editing IRB application/modification content, filing IRB communications and approval letters, creating and maintaining tracking databases for invoices and site-specific data, drafting email communications, and filing regulatory paperwork.
- Assist with administrative duties including scheduling meetings, planning travel, reimbursing expenses, and filing paperwork.
- Communicate daily with project personnel. Notify appropriate research personnel regarding problems or complications reported by participants or sites. Attend regular project meetings, supervision, and work collaboratively with staff.
- Coding qualitative human subject data and standardized patient data interviews for quality assessment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned/required.
- Competitive candidates will be detail-oriented, conscientious, and able to complete diverse types of tasks, take direction from more than one person, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. There is also potential for promotion to higher levels of research tasks and positions. This position is ideal for recent graduates interested in pursuing a PhD or equivalent graduate education in a mental health field.
- Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR equivalent education/experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related academic area.
- Experience on a research team
- Experience with clinical research
- Interest in mental health and trauma/injury research
- Computer skills with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, SPSS, and REDCap.
