Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Institutional Communications, the Web Editor researches, develops, produces, edits and maintains web content and the underlying strategy for the information architecture for key systemwide websites serving the University's internal community of faculty, staff and retirees.

This role provides guidance and recommendations about web content strategy, governance and structure to support departmental and divisional goals and objectives.

The Web Editor coordinates with technical staff, writers, department-level content owners to create, edit and manage web-based content including copy, photography, multimedia, infographics and policy documents; ensures high standards for timeliness, accuracy message consistency and usability.

This position guides internal clients, department staff, ITS and external vendors to ensure successful implementation of content strategy. The Web Editor may craft content strategy for individual web projects, report analytics and other metrics. The role requires a strong technical background including solid proficiency in multiple content management systems.

Duties

Duty 1: Develops and implements comprehensive short and long-range strategic digital communications programs and projects. Researches, develops and produces web content and the underlying strategy that drives the information architecture. Provides guidance and recommendations to clients and departmental leadership regarding web content strategy, governance and structure.

Develops, maintains and manages content including copy, photography, multimedia, infographics and policy documents for numerous UCOP websites serving UC's internal audiences.

Works proactively and closely with departmental and other UC colleagues to present information thoughtfully and consistent with audience needs and communications objectives, while following best practices for developing content for the Web. Assists in site planning, organization, testing and implementation of websites.

Monitors websites for outdated information and broken links; contacts departments and individuals whose information needs updating. Manages requests for updates and page fixes; implements page redirects as needed.

Updates and distributes content using Cascade Server content management system, WordPress and other CMS, as well as social media channels. Writes, edits and organizes page and site content to improve user experience and increase relevancy in search engine results.

Ensure that all sites are compliant with W3C accessibility guidelines.

Tracks traffic/site metrics to help evaluate performance of content and conducts research related to content, audience, etc. as needed; prepares regular reports and analytics.

Duty 2: Works closely with unit colleagues and clients to plan projects, and understand subject areas and communications objectives.

Consults with management and other professionals to develop strategic digital communication plans, programs or projects to ensure that digital communication meets the organization's needs and effectively delivers the desired message.

Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or 5 - 7 years' experience in a dynamic, high-volume creative office environment providing website content strategy, maintenance and support.

Demonstrated general knowledge of best web content practices; understanding of web browser functionalities, compatibilities and limitations; search engine optimization; and accessibility and ADA compliance.

Strong experience creating and editing Web pages through the use of a content management system.

Demonstrated ability to maintain logical directory structure and files on web server, including knowledge of accepted file/folder naming conventions.

Ability to organize multiple layers of copy and maintain consistency in voice, brand and site architecture.

Understanding of user centered Web content and a strong instinct for usability and effective content organization.

Strong familiarity with using a content management system (CMS) and basic experience with HTML and frontend editing software (such as Dreamweaver, GoLive or others). Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Demonstrated proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, user interface design, digital asset management/optimization, interoperability of applications/systems, web analytics, and other web communications capabilities, as well as understanding of W3C accessibility guidelines.

Familiarity with optimizing and sizing images for Web use and necessary techniques for use of video on the Web.

Experience with both Mac and PC platforms.

Demonstrated knowledge of the fundamentals of grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation; demonstrated knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines (including AP style); solid copyediting and proofreading skills. Attention to detail and accuracy.

Strong organization and time management skills: demonstrated ability to effectively organize, prioritize and manage a high volume of assignments, with frequent interruptions to complete tasks in a timely manner and within timelines.

Strong interpersonal communication, diplomacy, and relationship building skills to establish and maintain effective working partnerships with clients and other staff members, including political acumen and skill in troubleshooting and applying proactive and positive solutions; ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
