The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Architect.
Lead and participate in the conceptual design and implementation of advanced signal processing algorithms in resource constrained embedded systems. Assist Government sponsors in understanding the tradeoffs between digital hardware options (microprocessor, FPGA, ASIC) and provide solutions for point-of-collect data processing. Conceive novel algorithms to improve processing performance and efficiency. Manage tasks from system design through prototype fabrication and final integration with other products.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
1. Provide technical contributions and leadership in the design and development of embedded systems, including hardware selection, programming, design tradeoffs, and staffing plans. (70%)
2. Provide regular interface with Government sponsors, industry partners, and key Laboratory program and technical staff on activities related to the development and analysis of embedded systems. (10%)
3. Produce written documents and presentations of technical work, including system design, ICD, test plans, and technical manuals. (10%)
4. Lead and mentor software engineering design teams on differing design tasks. (10%)

Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field. 5 years of demonstrated experience developing and implementing digital signal processing concepts in any of the following: MATLAB, C/C , and VHDL/Verilog. 2 years of technical leadership in embedded systems development. Ability and desire to lead in a team environment. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and good organizational skills
Familiarity with RF communication systems and waveforms. Experience with any Real Time Operating System (RTOS) in an embedded environment. Proficiency with coding any assembly, Java, Python, C#, or scripting languages a plus. Prior experience working with DoD and IC communities and willingness to work on quick-reaction projects in support of the sponsor's operational requirements.
Special Working Conditions: Some travel to local sponsor sites and support for field testing may be required.
