The University of Houston Libraries seeks a Coordinator of Archival Processing with knowledge and experience in the practices of accessioning, arrangement, description and preservation of archives and manuscripts to lead archival processing operations in the Libraries’ Special Collections department. The Coordinator will manage and perform processing of records in all formats for the Libraries’ Special Collections department, which holds primary source collections of distinction that support teaching, learning, and scholarship on campus and globally. The Coordinator of Archival Processing will manage and implement policies and procedures, and supervise the preparation of archives and manuscript collections for research use and preservation storage.

Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the Coordinator will work closely with special collections curators, the Audiovisual Archivist, and the Coordinator for Digital Projects to promote online discovery of resources, research access, and physical and digital preservation of collections. The Coordinator will also collaborate with colleagues in Metadata & Digitization Services, Digital Research Services, and Library Technology Services in support of digital projects and programs, open access, and metadata description.

The special collections department is a priority area for UH Libraries to support research excellence and student success. The department has grown rapidly in the last decade, and currently comprises nine librarians and archivists, three full-time staff, and a number of graduate and undergraduate student assistants. Archival collections measure nearly 11,000 linear feet and continue to grow, alongside a rare book collection of over 100,000 volumes. Priority collection areas include energy & sustainability, women’s studies, performing & visual arts, Hispanic studies, Houston hip hop, LGBT history, Texas history, and the University of Houston Archives, among others.

The Coordinator of Archival Processing is a librarian position. Librarians hold academic rank pursuant to the University of Houston Librarians’ Bylaws Document. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. The UH Libraries support the ongoing professional development of librarians and our goal is to recruit librarians committed to continuous learning.

Qualifications:
Required: Master’s degree from ALA-accredited program; Training and experience in management of archives and manuscripts; Demonstrated excellent communication skills and strong service orientation; Proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as faculty and students.

Preferred: Project management skills; Familiarity or experience with archives collection management tools such as Archon or ArchivesSpace; Familiarity with digital preservation tools and strategies; Experience with multiple levels of archival processing, including detailed item-level and More Product Less Process practices; Knowledge of digital archives and cataloging metadata standards, including Encoded Archival Description and Describing Archives, a Content Standard; Supervisory experience; Demonstrated initiative and creativity; Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
