THIS RECRUITMENT IS PROMOTIONAL ONLY. YOU MUST PRESENTLY BE A FULL- OR PART-TIME REGULAR OR PROBATIONARY COUNTY OF SONOMA, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION, SONOMA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS, OR SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY EMPLOYEE IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

The Department of Child Support Services has requested a department promotional certification to fill a Child Support Financial Worker II position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary Department employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position.

The Child Support Financial Worker II performs a variety of tasks including:
  • Reviewing and auditing financial and legal documents for fiscal accuracy based on State and Federal requirements
  • Responding to inquiries from participants, department staff, and other child support organizations regarding child support financial activities
  • Assisting the public in person or by phone by answering inquiries related to child support payment status, case audits, regulations, and procedures
  • Maintaining child support financial records with specialized computer programs and calculators
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A strong ability to reconcile and process complex financial data
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with staff and the public by phone, in person, and in writing
  • Superb organization and prioritization skills, with a capacity to focus on complex tasks and projects in a frequently interrupted, fast-paced environment
  • Precise attention to detail
This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally this would include:

Child Support Financial Worker II: Academic course work in accounting, finance, public or business administration and one year of experience as a Child Support Financial Worker I with Sonoma County or in a similar position in another County Child Support Department.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: In government codes and established policies, procedures, and regulations that pertain to the allocation and distribution of child support payments; child support collection law; methods and techniques used to research and obtain information; information systems and equipment used in child support financial records.

Child Support Financial Worker I/II:

Ability to: analyze and compare financial documents for omissions, corrections, and accuracy; understand, explain, and apply specific statutes, codes, laws, regulations, and procedures; locate, identify and correct fiscal inaccuracies; use independent initiative and discretion in organizing work and carrying out instructions; type and perform data entry; operate office equipment such as calculators and computers; independently research and prepare correspondence in answer to inquiries about department financial records; review and code, post, balance, adjust and summarize financial transactions or statistical data; maintain and reconcile related records; prepare reports; follow oral and written instruction; write neatly and legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and general public.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A background investigation may be required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation. Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy. Reference information will not be made available to applicants.
